गुरूनहत्वा हि महानुभावान्
श्रेयो भोक्तुं भैक्ष्यमपीह लोके |
हत्वार्थकामांस्तु गुरूनिहैव
भुञ्जीय भोगान् रुधिरप्रदिग्धान् ||२-५||
Meaning
शब्दार्थाः (Word for word)
गुरून् -- teachers; अहत्वा -- having not killed; हि -- indeed; महानुभावान् -- great, venerable men; श्रेयः -- greater welfare; भोक्तुम् -- to partake; भैक्ष्यम् -- alms from begging; अपि -- even; इह -- here; लोके -- in the world; हत्वा -- having killed; अर्थकामान् -- (driven) desire for wealth; तु -- for; (lit. but) गुरून् -- teachers; इह -- here; एव -- only; (for emphasis) [इह एव -- here itself]; भुञ्जीय -- will have to enjoy; भोगान् -- pleasures; रुधिरप्रदिग्धान् -- blood-smeared;
अन्वयः (Word order)
महानुभावान् गुरून् अहत्वा इह लोके भैक्ष्यं भोक्तुम् अपि श्रेयः हि । हत्वा गुरून् तु इह एव अर्थकामान् भोगान् रुधिरप्रदिग्धान् भुञ्जीय?
अनुवादः (Translation)
It is indeed better to even partake of alms from begging here in this world, having not killed (these) venerable teachers; For, having killed (these) teachers, will I not have to enjoy here itself blood-smeared pleasures (driven by the) desire for wealth?
Notes
Ramanuja says that despite Krishna's advice, Arjuna is driven by compassion. Ramanuja also translates the above verse in a slightly different way. He associates the word अर्थकामान् with गुरून् .
Swami Ramsukhdasji prefers to associate अर्थकामान् with भोगान् instead.
