Verse 11

Today, December 27, is the 12th day of maargazhi (December-January). On each day of maargazhi, one verse from Andal's divine poem, the Tiruppavai. is savored. Today's verse is "kanaiththiLan kaRRerumai".

What I have presented is the surface meaning. Each verse can actually be understood in many poetic and profoundly philosophical ways.

kanaiththiLan kaRRerumai kanRukku irangi *
ninaiththu mulai vazhiyE ninRu paal cOra *
nanaiththillam cERaakkum naR celvan thangaay *
paniththalai vIzha nin vaacaR kadai paRRic *
cinaththinaal thennilangaik kOmaanaic ceRRa *
manaththukku iniyaanaip paadavum nI vaay thiRavaay *
iniththaan ezhundhiraay eedhenna pEruRakkam *
anaiththillath thaarum aRindhu ElOr empaavaay.

kanaiththu                       calling out
iLam                             young
kaRRu                            calves

erumai                           buffaloes
kanRukku                         for the calves
irangi                           showing motherly affection

ninaitthu                        thinking (of those young calves)
mulai vazhi E                    immediately through their udders or breasts
