To add to what was already said, I was told that men wear 6 threads starting on their wedding day because their wives, as women, cannot wear the sacred thread themselves, and therefore cannot perform associated karmas. It thus becomes the sacred duty of the husband to do the nityakarmas on his wife's behalf and he starts wearing 6 threads from that day forward.... A related question - Do men chant twice the number of Gayatris for instance, once they are married, because of the above reason?
