Re: Re: [sv-rituals] Abhivadhanam

I am not able to elaborate on the reason why, but to add to the
general thread, I was told by my grandfather that it is a sin
to prostrate before people who are not qualified to receive
them. It applies to giving dakshinai also.

What's worse, he mentioned that the sin extends to both the
person performing namaskaram AND the person who is receiving it
when he is not qualified to do so!

Another interesting fact - whenever somebody did namaskarams to
him and especially when he received abhivadanams, he would
perform extra Gayathri's that day to compensate. His
explanation was that blessing somebody diminishes his store of
positive karma/energy (sorry, I am not able to find the right
word here!) and that he is REQUIRED to chant the extra
Gayathri's to compensate, particularly for his blessings to
have any effect on the recipient.

Regards,
-Shuba

To laugh often and much; to win the respect of intelligent
people and the affection of children; to earn the appreciation
of honest critics and endure the betrayal of false friends; to
appreciate beauty; to find the best in others; to leave the
world a bit better, whether by a healthy child, a garden patch
or a redeemed social condition; to know even one life has
breathed easier because you have lived. This is to have
succeeded.
