Upcoming Telephone Upanyasam - Sep 4th

From the Bhakti List Archives

• August 31, 1999

Dear Bhaktas,

As many of you know, the present Jeeyar (Azhagiya Singar)
of Sri Ahobila Matham, Sri Narayana Yatindra Mahadesikan,
is giving a series of lectures via telephone
teleconference. The present series is on Madhurakavi
Alvar's "kanni-nun-ciruttaambu".

There have been several of these upanyAsams, but I
only heard my first one last Saturday. Let me tell
you, it was *outstanding*, and those of you who
know me know that praise is not something I give
easily. Srimad Azhagiya Singar explains every word
in great detail (the last upanyAsam covered just
half of one paasuram), following the purvaachaarya
commentaries and adding explanatory remarks and
anubhavams of his own. His style is very easy
to follow and brings out many nuances of meaning
in the text.

If you can understand Tamil and are interested in a
lecture from a scholar-acharya steeped in our tradition,
you should definitely listen to Srimad Azhagiya Singar's
lectures.

This month, one lecture a week is planned, and I encourage
all who can follow Tamil to listen in. Sri Azhagiya
Singar is an enthusiastic speaker and encourages questions
from all at the end.

Interested members should contact P. Dileepan at dileepan@utc.edu.

P.S. It is also helpful if seriously interested members have
the text of the commentaries at their disposal. For those
who have the book, the Swami mainly follows the commentary
of Azhagiya Manavaala Perumaal Naayanaar, though he frequently
intersperses the explanations of other acharyas.
