Someone had asked for the source of 'ahimsA paramo dharma" and I wasn't sure if a later post had given it. (It may well have; if so, trash this message). If I remember right, it is AnuSAsana parva 115.1. However, this precept has really been the hallmark of the Jain tradition (there are numerous exceptions, of course) and they sometimes begin their books/talks with this line.
