sri vishnu sahasra naamaavali - post 1

Dear Srivaishnava perunthagaiyeer,

In the Sri vishNu sahasra naamam there are lot of things to be enjoyed. One
is the repeat of naamaas with a common thread of the same word coming
through a number of naamaas leading to enjoying different qualities or
characteristics [guna in samskritham]  of the lord. An attempt is made by
this soul to enjoy krishna through this. 

As the first of this series, the word "mahaa" is chosen. There are 40
naamaas available and given here, thus accounting for 4% of the 1000. Since
one naamaa is a repeat you will find 39 numbers in the serial no. column.

One namaa "mahaan" is available, but since it will get changed as "om
mahathE nama when considered as a naamaa in fourth case. Hence it is not
included here. But who wants to include that namaa also can have that in
this list.

Please note that the naamaa numbers are as in sri bhattar bhaashyam. 

So bhakthaas who refer other books will have to look for small adjustments.
For their easy reference I have added the slokam no. as occurring in the
sthothram.

"mahaa" series of naamaas :  
1.	Om mahaa svanaaya nama:  -- naamaa no. 41 occurring in slokam 5 
	meaning: he, of sacred and venerable sound. Mahaan means venerable,
svanam means sound, whose call is thundered in hearts as compelling whisper.

2.	Om mahaa thapasE nama: -- naamaa no.123 occurring in slokam 13
	meaning: he endowed with great tapas. tapas has 3 meanings -
knowledge, prosperity, might [jnaanam, aisvaryam, prathaapam]

3.	Om mahaa maayaaya nama: -- naamaa no.172 occurring in slokam 18
	meaning: he possessing wonderful power of enchantment - supreme
master of maayaa.

4.	Om mahaa uthsaahaaya nama: -- naamaa no.173 occurring in slokam 18
	meaning: the great enthusiast - performing all acts by a fraction of
his will - great dynamic accomplisher.

5.	Om mahaa balaaya nama: -- naamaa no. 174 occurring in slokam 18
	meaning: he of immense strength - is the source of all strengths-
omnipotent.

6.	Om mahaa budhdhayE nama: -- naamaa no. 175 occurring in slokam 19
	meaning: he of great intellect - omniscient.

7.	Om mahaa veeryaaya nama: -- naamaa no. 176 occurring in slokam 19 
	meaning: he of great virility - supreme essence.

8.	Om mahaa sakthayE nama: -- naamaa no. 177 occurring in slokam 19
	meaning: he of immense power - all powerful - fully efficient.

9.	Om mahaa dhyudhayE nama: -- naamaa no.178 occurring in slokam 19
	meaning: he of splendorous light - dhyuthi is glow, sObhaa.

10.	Om mahaa adthri dhrugE nama: for sri sankara, 
	Om mahaa adhri dhruthE nama for sri bhattar -- naamaa no. 182
occurring in slokam 19
	meaning: the bearer of great mountain - [who bore the great mandhara
mountain during churning milk ocean in amrutha mathanam ]

11.	Om mahaa ishu aasaaya nama : -- naamaa no. 183 occurring in slokam
19
	meaning: the wielder of great arrows - enchanting user of great bow
saaranga.

12.	Om mahaa indhraaya nama: -- naamaa no. 269 occurring in slokam 29
	meaning: he of great wealth - one having all round effulgence of
highest order - lord of indhra , the king od dhEvaas or gods.

13.	Om mahaa asanaaya nama: -- naamaa no. 304 occurring in slokam 33 
	meaning: he who is a voracious consumer of all in his own creation
[universe]

14.	Om mahaa akshaaya nama: -- naamaa no. 355 occurring in slokam 38
	meaning: he who has the great garuda as his vehicle or mode of
transport.

15.	Om mahaa Bhaagaaya nama: -- naamaa no. 372 occurring in slokam 40
	meaning: the extremely fortunate - one enjoying happiness of high
order - one taking greatest share in all yajnaas.

16.	Om mahaa kOsaaya nama: -- naamaa no. 433 occurring in slokam 46
	meaning: he who has a great treasure which does not dwindle in
giving

17.	Om mahaa bhOgaaya nama: -- naamaa no. 434 occurring in slokam 46
	meaning: he who grants objects of great enjoyment to his devotess.

18.	Om mahaa Dhanaaya nama: -- naamaa no. 435 occurring in slokam 46 
	meaning: he of immense wealth

19.	Om mahaa makhaaya nama: -- naamaa no. 440 occurring in slokam 47
	meaning: he who is a great sacrifice- sacrifices dedicated to him
confer total liberation from bondage.

20.	Om mahaa ijyaaya: -- naamaa no. 448 occurring in slokam 48
	meaning: he who is the object of superior worship which is not
sullied by desire for other fruits.

21.	Om mahaa dhEvaaya nama: -- naamaa no. 492 occurring in slokam 52
	meaning: he the great player - sporting with all dhEvaas.

22.	Om mahaa udhadhi sayaaya nama: -- naamaa no. 522 occurring in slokam
55 
-	meaning: he who reclines in the great ocean [milk ocean]

23.	Om mahaa arhaaya nama: naamaa 525 occurring in slokam 56
-	meaning: who desrves the highest worship - worthy of worships.

24.	Om mahaa srngAya nama: -- naamaa no. 540 occurring in slokam 57
	meaning: the big tusked varaahaa - the great horned.

25.	Om mahaa varaahaaya nama: -- naamaa no.542 occurring in slokam 58
	meaning: the great boar- the third avathaara.

26.	Om mahaa manasE nama: -- naamaa no. 562 occurring in slokam 59 
		- meaning: magnanimous and broad minded.

27.	Om mahaa kramaaya nama: -- naamaa no. 676 occurring in slokam 72 
	meaning: who provides great steps gradually ascending to raise the
jeevaas - all pervading.

28.	Om mahaa karmaNE nama: -- naamaa no. 677 occurring in slokam 72 ,
also naamaa 793 occurring in slokam 84 
	meaning: who performs great deeds.

29.	Om mahaa thEjaaya nama: -- naama no. 678 occurring in slokam 72 
	meaning: of great resplendence - extremely effulgent

30.	Om mahaa uragaaya nama: -- naama no. 679 occurring in slokam 72 
	meaning: the great serpent - though great enters into the hearts of
all beings

31.	Om mahaa krathavE nama: - naamaa no. 680 occurring in slokam 72 
		- meaning: the great sacrifice - one who is worshipped by
easy means - not great sacrifices- the yajnaas.
32.	Om mahaa yajvanE nama: -- naama no. 681 occurring in slokam 72 
	meaning: one who performed great yajnaas -whose worshippers are very
superior.

33.	Om mahaa yajyaaya nama: -- naama no. 682 occurring in slokam 72 
	meaning: he whose worship itself is the greatest yajna. [ japa yajna
is glorified by krishna as supreme and hence he is maha yajnaaya nama:]

34.	Om mahaa havishE nama: -- naama no. 683 occurring in slokam 72 
	meaning: one who is worshipped with supreme oblations - himself is
the great offering

35.	Om mahaa moorthayE nama: -- naama no. 723 occurring in slokam 77 
	meaning: he of immense divine form of the lord.

36.	Om mahaa hradhaya nama: -- naama no. 809 occurring in slokam 86 
	meaning: he who is like the vast and deep refreshing pond or pool.

37.	Om mahaa garthaaya nama: -- naama no.810 occurring in slokam 86 
	meaning: the great bottom less pit - the great chasm

38.	Om mahaa bhoothaya nama: -- naama no. 811 occurring in slokam 86
	meaning: he who treats great souls as his own - the great being.

39.	Om mahaa nidhayE nama: -- naama no. 812 occurring in slokam 86 
	meaning: he who treats great souls as his treasure - the great
abode.
