I may not sound too knowledgible on this but let me try. Why did Bhishma who was a great devotee of Krishna and who finally gave the Vishnu Sahasranaama, have to be killed by Arjuna and Shikandi's arrows ? Why the lord himself at one point had to take out charriot's wheel to fight him ? Why did Ajaya and Vijaya who were with Chaturbhujams and divya- sariram, and right in Sri Vaikuntam be killed by Varaha Perumal and Narasimha perumal when they at one point in Sriman Narayana's abode itself ? It all sounds a bit tough to comprehend. But its Bhagavan's leelai. Only when certain things are beyond our comprehension do we feel awe- struck. God's leelais are like that. Maybe one reason could be that, they sided with the wrong persons over time: Bhishma with Duryodhana, Dvivida with Narakaasura, Ajaya and Vijaya prevented Sanaka kumaras from entering Vaikunta by speaking harshly. Probably all this was destined as a leelai by God himself. But the good point is that they all got killed at the hands of the lord and watching the lord while they breathed their last. Even Vaali finally says that he is happy because he was killed by Rama himself, with an arrow that had the Rama-naama on it and with the Rama- Swarupam right in front of his eyes. His anthima-smarana was the highest that one could ask for. So he died happily. Finally about quaffing Amrita and get getting killed, one would imagine that all Devas get their shot of Amrita, but their lokas are all evacuated and newly created for each Manvantara, in which a prior Indra could be born as an insect on earth. All this Amrita has no business in front of Sriman Narayana, when its time, they have to go. I dont know if this made any sense at all. But it was just a try.
