SrI: SrImathE Ramanujaya namah: Dearest Srivaishnavas In this ten, PeriyAzhwAr enjoys YasOdhA calling the crow for bringing a stick for Kutti KaNNan. Why stick? Because, Kutti KaNNan wanted to rear the calves and cows. Hence he needs to be provided with a stick. But... last ten was combing the hair after the bathing ceremony and next one is Poochootal (adorning His head with flowers) and how come YasOdhA wants a stick now for KaNNan. Reason: Last ten- last pAsuram: KaNNan (Kutti)'s head is placed on the pillow- with His hairs behind.. He thinks that the crow is combing now. It is YasOdhA who is combing. Due to strain, and any other reason (generally unknown when a child cries) whatsoever, He is crying- also saying that eh wanted to go out like other boys behind the cows and calves. So, to appease Him, YasodhA says.."oh kaakkaay.. (crow)! Kuttikku oru kOl kOnduvaa.. Bring a stick for KaNNan so that he can go out..". It is not her intent to send Him out. This is a temporary distraction to the Kutti so that her job is done (combing and adorning the hairs with flowers- dressing etc..) Or one can also interpret that it is "senkOl"(The royal spear that the King has in His Hand). He is Parathvam and is the unparalleled Supreme Lord. He needs to be given that Royal senkOl. So, bring. It is an ornament also to this cowherd Boy. Like a small child, when dressed like KaNNan, it is given a toy flute. Similarly,having taken a birth as cowherd boy, he needs to be given a stick (though He is not sent out), for that lakshaNam.. So it is also an enjoyment of adorning the cowherd Boy with an ornament of stick.. (in archAvathAram too, one can enjoy in Mannaargudi Rajagopalan swamy sannidhi) Let us enjoy with that background. vElikkOlvetti viLaiyaaduvillERRi thaalikkozhundhaith thadangazhuththiRpooNdu peeliththazhaiyaip piNaiththuppiRakittu kaalippinpOvaaRku_Or_kOlkoNduvaa kadaln^iRavaNNaRku_Or_kOlkoNduvaa. 1. 1. Cut that branch from that fence and bring for this darling KaNNan, who goes behind the cows; wearing the peacock feather on his head so beautifully; who wears the tender leaves strung together as a garland around His neck; who has the toy bow (to play) in his hand. Bring a stick for this blue hued ocean coloured one.. She says: fence.. So, you do not have to climb the tree; simply cut the short plant in the fence.. The garland of leaves on the Lord is the beauty to behold.. Bring that stick; he may have either for the cows; or for using it a bow (with the previous avatar in His mind) kongungudandhaiyum kOttiyoorumpErum engum_thirindhu viLaiyaadum_enmakan sangampidikkum thadakkaikkuththakka nal angamudaiyadhOr_kOlkoNduvaa arakkuvazhiththadhOr_kOlkoNduvaa. 2. 2. For this kutti- who goes to Thirukkudanthai, kongu (Kerala divya Desam), ThiruppEr and other temples and plays (showing Himself to devotees); - my son KaNNan- who has the most divine Paanchajanyam (Sanghu- conch shell) in His broad palms. Bring a (strong fat) stick for that palm. A nicely painted stick.. Bring that. Swamy desikan also refers to kongu divya desam in his Paramatha bhangam.. [thUdhuvanaay oru kOti maRaigaLellAm thodarndhOdath thaniyOditthuyaran theerttha, maadhavanaar VADAKONGIL vaaniyaaRRin vaNNikai nannadam koNdu..] Also arakku vazhitthatthu- painted stick.. Also it can mean: arakkarai azhaitthadhu- One who killed the asurAs- Bring a stick for Him.. kaRuththittu_edhirn^inRa kanchanaikkonRaan poRuththittu_edhirvandha puLLinvaaykeeNdaan neRiththakuzhalkaLai neengamunnOdi siRukkanRumEyppaaRku_Or_kOlkoNduvaa dhEvapiraanukku_Or_kOlkoNduvaa. 3. 3. He killed Kamsa, who angered on KaNNan and made himself an enemy to KaNNan; who had sent all others to kill kaNNan (but He never came- scared..). KaNNan went there and the first time He saw Kamsa and killed him then and there. He tore open the bird asurA which had come in His front to kill Him. This little darling goes and runs behind the calves and cows to protect them so beautifully, with his long hairs (tuft- sikhA) swinging from side to side. Bring a stick for this little KaNNan- the Lord of Devas- bring a stick. When an enemy comes in the front, He waits till the last minute (giving them an opportunity to change and transform) and kills only as a last resort. He runs and protects His Asrithars (cows, calves, cowherd group and other devotees) onREyuraippaan orusollEsolluvan thunRumudiyaan dhuriyOdhananpakkal senRu_anguppaaradham kaiyeRindhaanukku kanRukaLmEyppadhOr_kOlkoNduvaa kadaln^iRavaNNarkku_Or_kOlkoNduvaa. 4. Even a small place where a needle can enter..- I will never give.- said DhuryOdhanan (the crowned king- meaning: ahankAra mamakAra person) - to KaNNan, who went as a messenger with such a sowlabhyam for the sake of His Asrithars (devotees) Pancha paaNdavas. When He saw DhuryOdhanan's enemity for His devotees (Bhagawathas) KaNNan decided to go ahead with mahaabhAratha yuddham (the battle of KurukshEthra). Bring a stick for this great KaNNan, who made Himself an instrument (with such sowlabhyam) for rearing the small calves and cows). A stick for the ocean coloured blue hued Lord. The first line- onRE uraippAn; oru sole solluvaan- This is interpreted to be referring to DhuryOdhanan saying .. I will vener gove anything to Paandavas- that is the only thing He kept saying. It can also refer to our Lord- who never utters anything twice. RaamOr dhvirnaabhibhAshathE.. na mE mOkam vach bhavEth.. He never utters anything other than truth; and never goes back on His words. seeronRuthoodhaayth thuriyOdhananpakkal ooronRuvENdip peRaadha_urOdaththaal paaronRip paaradhamkaiseydhu paarththaRkuth thEronRaiyoorndhaaRku_Or_kOlkoNduvaa dhEvapiraanukku_Or_kOlkoNduvaa. 5. On the earth, The Lord- who has the most auspicious (kalyANa GuNas) attributes- went so gracefully as dhUthan- a messenger for Pancha paaNdavas, and asked for even a small village saying "even that alone is enough" and gave a chance for dhuryOdhanan to survive. Angered by the refusal by dhuryOdhanan, He arranged for the battle and drove the peerless chariot of Arjunan. Bring a stick for this chariot driver. Stick for this Devapiraan. This Deva piraan- is the Paravaassudevan- who is there at VaikuNtEthu parE lOkE.. He came on this earth and arranged for the battle of KurukshEthra, when all his other efforts were refused by the cruel DhuryOdhanan. pAronRu- When BhUmA dEvi along with other Devas went to the Lord, crying and requesting His dayA to reduce the burden on earth with all evil elements on the earth; He appeared on the earth. When he asked for just a village, even that was declined. KaNNan decided that the whole earth (paar) needs to be given to Paandavas and hence paaronRi.. :-) This pAsuram rhymes the same as SeeronRu thUppul thiruvEnkadamudaiyaan pAronRach chonna pazhamozhiyul OronRuthaanE amaiyAdho... dhAraNiyil vaazhavaarkku vanERap pOmaLavum vaazhvu... The words are almost same in both verses. This thaniyan on Desikan was sung by Pillai lokam jeer, who had written 18 divine esoteric rahasya granthams and is one of the doyens of Srivaishnava acharyas. He was a contemporary Acharya of Vedanta Desikan. Reading, listening and enjoying the great numerous works of Vedantha Desikan, and seeing uninterrupted life breadth of Sri Ramanuja darsanam in all those works with no extra words and no extra argument.., overawed by the beauty of his works, Sri Pillai lokacharyar composed this dedicatory verse. KaNNan- the Ramanujan (Raman's younger brother) drove the chariot and uttered the Charama slOkam and destroyed the apArthars (one against Paarthan- arjunan) ; Our Desikan drove the unparalleled chariot of Ramanuja dharsanam and composed so many unparalleled works and destroyed apArthams- wrong meanings. KaNNan is Deva piraan- Desikan is Acharya saarvabhouman- hailed by the Great Sri Pillai lokam jeer himself. One who enters into even one of Desikan's (this KaNNan of ThiruvEnkatam'- ThiruvEnkatamudaiyaans's aavtaar) works- will be blessed to reach the vaan- (Paramapadham) -says the most merciful Acharya- Sri Pillai lokacharya. aalaththilaiyaan aravinaNaimElaan neelakkadaluL nedungaalamkaNvaLarndhaan baalappiraayaththE paarththarkku_aruLseydha kOlappiraanukku_Or_kOlkoNduvaa kudandhaikkidandhaarkku_Or_kOlkoNduvaa. 6. This Lord- who reclined on the little Banyan leaf on blue hued ocean; - who had His Yoga nithrA for a long oozhi kaalam (time); who blessed Arjunan even during his childhood; this most beautiful handsome Boy Kutti KaNNan- bring a stick. A stick for this Lord of Thirukkudanthai. He blessed Arjunan even in his childhood. How? Devendran's son is Arjunan and he had prayed to KaNNan to take care of his son and hence KaNNan took care of him from his childhood. Also Arjunan Nara avatar and Narayanan avatar is KaNNan and hence sicne childhood He took care of this Nara- arjunan. When AzhwAr enjoyed the reclining Alilai KaNNan, He remembered the most beautiful ArchA moorthy, Kudanthai kidanthAn. pon_thikazh chiththirakoodapporuppinil uRRavadivil orukaNNumkoNda ak kaRRaikkuzhalan kadiyanviraindhu unnai maRRaikkaNkoLLaamEkOlkoNduvaa maNivaNNan^ambikku_Or_kOlkoNduvaa. 7. [When she mentioned all this, the crow looks at KaNNan with its head tilted.. - YasOdhA remembers kAkAsuran] In the mot beautiful fertile, ChithrakUta mountain, He (this most cruel Lord:-) - snatched away one of your eyes with His arrow (because of your apachAram on His divine consort- SitA PiraaTTi) when He took Ramavatar; Bring a stick quickly to this most beautiful haired (since you combed this beautiful hair) Kutti KaNNan in order not to remove your other eye (realizing that you are that same kAkAsuran). Bring a stick for this blue hued maNivaNNan. Even when a crow looked at me and touched with its beak my flesh, He became angry and punished the crow. When the whole body of mine is sought after by this rAvaNan and why does He still wait?- lamented SitA- Hence Rama is referred to here. Like that He won't kill you. You have already performed saranagathi. He won't kill you. But there is no stopping Him to punish you if you perform (or keep doing apacharams). So, come do kaimkaryam. Bring a stick. [All crows, due to kAkAsuran's apcharam see with only one eyes- tradition says. Also, a digression. Only Indian squirrels have three lines on their backs:-) ] minnidaich cheedhaiporuttaa ilangaiyar mannanmaNimudi paththum_udanveezha thannikaronRillaach chilaikaalvaLaiththitta minnumudiyaRku_Or_kOlkoNduvaa vElaiyadaiththaaRku_Or_kOlkoNduvaa. 8. Bring a stick for this Lord- who bent His bow and aimed the arrow to rAvaNan (and killed him letting his crowned ten heads fall down on the ground-), the king of LankA- who had abducted the narrow - lightning like waisted SitA PiraaTTi (to get her). Bring a stick for this Lord who built a bridge across the deep vast ocean. Though the king of lankA - was he; he could not get SitA, she being an ayOnija. thennilangaimannan siramthOLthuNiseydhu minnilangupooN vibeedaNan^ambikku ennilangun^aamaththaLavum arasenRa minnilangaaraRku_Or_kOlkoNduvaa vEngadavaaNarkku_Or_kOlkoNduvaa. 9. Bring a stick for this KaNNan- who wears most shining, glittering, lightning like ornaments; who had cut the shoulders and heads of the most strongest Ravanan, the king of beautiful lankA; and who had coronated and instructed his younger brother Vibheeshana, the ornament-adorned one to rule (in spite of his unwillingness) as long as this Raama naamam (meaning for long time...). Bring a stick for this Lord of ThiruvEnkatam. The ornament adorned VibhIshanan- The ornament is Prapatti- one who performed self-surrender to the Lord- that is the ornament in which he glitters. Hence Rama made this prapannan a king, in spite of his unwillingness, saying, "take care of these subjects of your kingdom.". When he wanted to come to Paramapadham along with Rama, He asked him to continue ruling in the path of Dharma, as long as the subjects live in here.. He is such a dharma chinthanan. So, come and bring a stick. Jeer (Sri Manavala Mamunigal) enjoys, "the lightning like glittering ornamented - applies to ThiruvEnkatamudiayaan- He never considers disparity among Asrithars -devotees and showers with his dayA mercifully on everyone- That is His most valuable AbharaNam- ornament. DayA. That can be seen in this archAvataar of Thirumalai. akkaakkaay! nampikkuk kOlkoNduvaavenRu mikkaaLuraiththasol villipuththoorppattan okkavuraiththa thamizhpaththumvallavar makkaLaippeRRu makizhvar_ivvaiyaththE. 10. Oh crow! YasOdhA asked you to bring the stick for this guNa poorNan- Lord who has the most auspicious attributes. These words- in the role of Yasodha are sung by Sri Villiputthur's Bhattan- (Bhattar piraan) in Tamil language in ten verses. Those who learn them (or read these translation) will be blessed with happiness (meaning- bliss in Paramapadham) mikkAL- YasOdhA addressed as mikkAL_ greater One.. She is certainly the greatest One – better blessed than Devaki; most fortunate to rear Kutti KaNNan.
