I received the following interesting note from
Dr.T.C.A.Srinivasaramanujan (tcasr@yahoo.com):
In the latest issue of Saptagiri[August 2001], a
journal of Tirumala Tirupati Devasthanam, there is
an article in Tamil by Sri T.A.Krishnamacharya on
PeriyavachanPillai. The name of the Acharya is
shown to be translation of Sanskrit word
'Mahacharya", a synonym of Lord Krishna. As
revealor of Srimad Bhagawat Gita, He gets this
name, says the author. In corrupted form, it
becomes 'Macharya', in which form it appears in
the name, Krishnamacharya. The author says unlike
other names, Raghavacharya, Varadacharya,
Rangacharya, Krishnamacharya is the only name
which has the joining word'Ma' between the basic
name or "Christian" name[Krishna] and
surname[Acharya]. The author provides an
innovative interpretation of Perivachan Pillai,
who is the only saint to have written commentary
on Divya Prabandham[though all his works are not
extant]
People who do not know that Mahacharya is one of
the names of Lord Krishna and who are not aware of
the etymology of the word Krishnamacharya may be
commended to read the aricle by Sri
T.A.Krishnamacharya. The journal is available from
Editor, Sapthagiri, T.T.D., Tirupati-517
