When doing the sankalpa, one simply mentions the count
by saying '-sankhyayA gayatrI-mahA-mantra-japam kariSye'.
The  can be:

  1008 -- ashTottara-sahasra
  108  -- ashTottara-Sata
  28 -- ashTa-vimSati
  10 -- daSa
