The mind tends to wander at the slightest opportunity. It is not without justification that Arjuna complains 'cancalam hi manaH'! I think it helps to start out by focussing on a particular sloka, paasuram, or prayer, *before* actually performing the sandhya proper. This tends to calm the mind and give us some place the rest. Sometimes when I have recited a particularly moving patikam from Tiruvaymoli I find it easier to concentrate and relax while doing the sandhya. From here I try to think about the meaning of the mantras when I go through the motions. All the prokshana, prAsana, etc., are purificatory rites and atonement for the pApas we perform out of anger, selfishness and imperfect knowledge. I then think of the arghyas as being a meagre offering to the resplendent Paramatman residing within the sun. The tarpaNam with the dvadasa-namas are to the twelve forms of the Paramatman which preside over each of the twelve solar months of the year. You are no doubt aware of the meaning of the Gayatri itself. I try to think of this during the japa, and the general meaning of the upasthAna mantras after the japa is complete. Sandhyavandana was considered by the rishis as a great meditation, a mahA-yoga. If you are lucky enough to be adept in dhyAna and can focus on some aspects of your self it should not be difficult to translate this to the sandhya as well. I wish I had your strength of mind! best wishes, Mani ------------------------ Yahoo!
