SrI: SrImathE Ramanujaya namah: Dearest srivaishnavas, ThirumallirinchOlai enREn; enna Thirumaal vandhu ennenju niRaiya pugundhaan- said NammAzhwAr [I simply uttered the name ThirumalrinchOlai; uttering just the name of the divya desam, Thirumaal entered into my heart fully and completely]. On similar token, PeriyAzhwAr also enjoys ThirumalirunchOlai Lord here. Having enjoyed Kutti KaNNan’s baala leelAs, AzhwAr sang various divya Desam perumAL including ThirumalirucnhOlai; ThirumalirunchOlai PerumAL, desirous of AzhwAr’s heart, blessed AzhwAr with Parama bhakthi. Thus bursts out this [yet another] wonderful ten. Penultimate ten of PeriyAzhwAr Thirumozhi. dhukkachchuzhalaiyaichchoozhndhukidandha valaiyai_aRappaRiththu pukkinilpukkunnaikkaNdukoNdEn inippOkaviduvadhuNdO? makkaLaRuvaraikkallidaimOdha izhandhavaLthanvayiRRil sikkenavandhupiRandhun^inRaay! thirumaalirunchOlaiyendhaay! 1. Oh EmperumAnE! [Lord!] the one who appeared quickly in Devaki’s womb where six children were born earlier and were beaten against the rock to death by Kamsan! My father! The One who appeared in ThirumalirunchOlai Divya Desam! Having seen and enjoyed You, I have [been blessed to have] held You firm in my heart, destroying all the traps and nets of karmic diseases which had caught my body. After that, Will I let You leave me and go away? Never. In last ten, AzhwAr addressed to diseases and papas to vanish and run away from his body as his body has housed the Lord in the cave of his heart. He starts the ten here with the same. Having let You reside in my heart, destroying all my paapams, will I ever let You go away from my heart? No. pukkinil- pukkagam- the husband’s place for a lady. When the lady goes to her pukkagam, her husband will always stay with her. When she is at her father’s home, the hubby may come off and on- but not stay for ever. Having sung wrongly or incorrectly (sazahkku naakaiyun kOndu punkavi sonnEn) I am blessed with your PoorNaanugraham, and not will not let that go away. Having got all my karmic diseases destroyed, how will it be possible that You would go away and I will get back the old status? Due to the association with KaalanEmi asuran and the curse of BrahmA, the six asurAs were made to be born in Devaki’s womb and were to be beaten against the rock to death by Kamsan. There was a voice during Devaki’s wedding that the eighth garbham (child in the uterus) would kill Kamsan. Scared Kamsan imprisoned Devaki and Vasudevar with shackles and killed her children one after the other till sixth. The voice never said, “Eighth child born”. It mentioned only eighth garbham. Hence the seventh foetus was AdhisEshan which the Lord did not let it reside full term as AdhisEshan (child) would have to be given to Kamsan for killing the same. Sriman Narayanan transformed the foetus to one by name Rohini so that Balarama would be with KaNNan. Thus KaNNan appeared as the eight garbham; but as seventh one born out of Devaki’s womb dispelling the sorrows of Devaki’s quickly and with speed bypassing the seventh child. Thus, pitying my state also, You need to appear and dispel my sorrows and do not disappear from my heart. Will I let You go away? vaLaiththuvaiththEn_inippOkalottEn unthanindhiraNYaalankaLaal oLiththidiln^in_thiruvaaNaikaNdaay nee_oruvarkkummeyyanallai aLiththengumn^aadumn^akaramum thammudaiththeevinaitheerkkaluRRu theLiththuvalancheyyumtheerththamudaith thirumaalirunchOlaiyendhaay! 2. [I can go out someway or the other; If you do not let me go, I will hide myself here without being seen by you at all.- Says PerumAL. AzhwAr swears on PerumAL in this pAsuram] My Father! The Lord of ThirumalirunchOlai divya desam full of sacred ponds of clear waters, the sprinkling of which can cleanse of one from all sins! People from all cities, all places flock here at ThirumalirunchOlai to get their sins removed with such sacred waters. I have surrounded You and captured You in my heart. Hereafter I would never let You leave from there. If you attempt to hide Yourself there itself not showing yourself to me, then let me swear on You and Your divine consort. (nin thiru ANai) [Unless I do that] You, (who can not bear to see Bhagawathas’ suffer} are so mysterious and mischievous and do not show Your true form to everyone. This line of swearing on the Lord and His divine consort (nin thiruvaaNai kaNdaay) is similar to NammAzhwAr’s ini naan poGalottEn; onRum maayam seyyEl ennaiyE.. maayam seyyEl ennai, un thirummarvatthu maalai nangai.. vaasam chey poonkuzhalaaL ThiruvaaNai ninANai kaNdaay.. At ThirumalirunchOlai divya desam, kuRavar (gypsies) offering the paddy seeds (the fruits of their hard work) along with Havis (Ghee) at Your Lotus Feet praising “pallANdu (Long live) for Your lotus feet!” and the eat the Bhagawath prasAdham with devotion and care saying that this is the rare one to be obtained.. Such greatest Lord of ThirumalirunchOlai! My father! I, who have performed the upAyam (the way) which can yield eternal kaimkaryam at the lotus feet of Sarva Swami, - after getting such a jnAnamm of Parathvam and sEshithvam of yours and my sEshathvam to You for ever, will I be able to ever leave You and serve someone else waiting for his instruction? Being so, would amount to destruction of Your greatness and glories (with the world blaming You for ignoring and letting the ananya gathis like me to go away and ask someone else.. which can never be Your nature and is against the jeevathma’s nature as well – as the souls are eternally subservient to You) Even the gypsies – as ParamaikAnthins in this divya desam offer their yields at Your feet and pray to You praising pallANdu for Your feet (and not ask anything from You). I can not bear to go serve someone else; I am eternally sEshan to You and hence, do not hide Yourself. I am a nithya nirUpAdhika ananhaarya sEshan. kaadhampalavumthirindhuzhanRERku angOrn^izhalillain^eerillai un paadhan^izhalallaalmaRROruyirppidam naan_engumkaaNkinRilEn thoodhusenRaay! kurupaaNdavarkkaay angOr_poysuRRampEsichchenRu pEdhancheydhu_engumpiNampadaiththaay! thirumaalirunchOlaiyendhaay! 4. Oh my father! ThirumalirunchOlai Lord! The One who went as PaaNdava dhUthan (messenger for PaaNdavas) to DhuryOdhanan! There as if (appeared to be) being in an impartial position, You acted and ultimately made the Kauravaas fall dead in the battlefield! After having traveled such a long distance for ages and be exhausted, there is no shadow for me anywhere to take shelter. There is no water found anywhere in the vicinity. Hence, there is no shelter other than Your Lotus feet which can enliven me in this world or in any world. Do not think that I serve You and have surrendered to You just because your greatness will diminish otherwise. Wherever I go, my life is not full. The palaces, the trees, the shadows, or the river waters – they do not enliven me; not do they give me the life to me. I have not found anything more satisfying or more fulfilling to me than Your Lotus feet. Only that can make me live and nothing else. [Before KaNNan went as Paandavas’ messenger] DhruYodhanan and Arjunan went to KaNNan to seek His help for the battlefield without letting the other know. KaNNan woke up to see Arjunan standing at His feet and turned His head to see DhuryOdhanan sitting behind. DhuryOdhanan said, “There is no difference between us and Paandavas for You; as we are in no way less closer and less related to You than the Pancha pandavas. Hence You need to help me only. “ KaNNan never said, “You are the hater of Pandavas and hence dwEshi for me as well. “. Instead, You came first; But I saw Arjunan first; Hence I will help both of you equally. What do you both need from me? [He appeared as impartial to both; but has different calculations underneath favoring to His devotees] DhuryOdhanan asked for KaNNan’s army while Arjunan wanted just KaNNan alone in his side. kaalumezhaakaNNan^eerumn^illaa udalsOrndhun^adungi kural mElumezhaamayirkkoochchumaRaa enathOLkaLumveezhvozhiyaa maalukaLaan^iRkum_enmananE! unnaivaazhaththalaippeydhittEn sElukaLaan^iRkumn^eeLsunaisoozh thirumaalirunchOlaiyendhaay! 5. My Father! The Lord of ThirumalirunchOlai Divya Desam surrounded by streams of water where fishes jump and play! My feet do not lift themselves up; my tears of joy do not stop from the eyes; it keeps rolling down cheeks; the voice does not come out due to my body being exhausted. The hair follicles stand on its end. (goose pimples due to anubhavam); the shoulders droop with exertion. The reason for all this is: i.e. my mind and is desirous of You only. Hence, I have been blessed to have reached You, being my means and the Goal (You are the upAya upEya bhUthan). eruththukkodiyudaiyaanum piramanum_indhiranum maRRum oruththarum_ippiRaviyennumn^Oykku marundhaRivaarumillai maruththuvanaayn^inRamaamaNivaNNaa! maRupiRavithavirath thiruththi unkOyiRkadaippukappey thirumaalirunchOlaiyendhaay! 6. [Even if you want me only, why do you not go and ask demi gods for the same thing that you ask from me? They (unlike me) can give you what you need faster] Lord of ThirumalirunchOlai! My father! Rudran (Vrushaba dwajan- the one who has bull in his flag) and Chathur mukhan (four faced brahmaa), Devendran, and all others – Not a single one among them knows the medicine for this disease of births and deaths. Not only do You know the medicine, You Yourself are the doctor as well. On blue hued lord! Please bless me and have mercy on me to avoid any more janmam (births) and make me enter Your place and be at Your lotus feet serving Them for ever and ever. Some may not know how to make medicine; but will know what is the medicine for the disease and can guide. But for the disease of births and to get rid of them, the idhara devathas like Rudran, Brahmaa, Indran Vinayaka, et al do not know at all the medicine as well the know how. You – not only do know the medicine; You are the doctor Himself. Some wish to get rid of sanchita karma alone leaving praarabdha karma; some do not want any more janmam at all. Some wish for immediate Paripoorna Brahmaanubhavam and want salvation right then. You only can grant the medicine and the solution for their diseases as they have and the cure that they seek to the extent. Thus, with saadhYopAyam (as the medicine- the upAyam) You conduct the prapatti (Saranagathi) at Your lotus feet and You as siddhOpAyam (being the doctor) readily applies the medicine to get rid of the diseases for permanent cure. Please bless me and have mercy on me to avoid any more janmam (births) and make me enter Your place and be at Your lotus feet serving Them for ever and ever akkaraiyennumanaththakkadaluLazhundhi unpEraruLaal ikkaraiyERiyiLaiththirundhEnai anchalenRukaikaviyaay sakkaramumthadakkaikaLum kaNkaLumpeedhakavaadaiyodum sekkarn^iRaththuchchivappudaiyaay! thirumaalirunchOlaiyendhaay! 7. Oh My father! The Lord of ThirumalirunchOlai! The One who has the divine chakrA (like the red skies) in his resplendent hand and the one who has large eyes and smooth white silk cloth (peethAmbharam)! Having been shoved into the deep ocean of samsaaric afflictions and of tremendous sins (paapam) and sorrows (dhukka samudhram), due to Your merciful glance, I have been able to climb and hold the banks of the ocean to come out of the deep vast horrible ocean and am exhausted not being able to climb the next step to Your divine Paramapadham. Please show Your hand (abhayam) indicating “Do not fear”. [Read the nyAsa thilakam slOkam –dhurmOsOthapatakarma kOti… here for enjoyment- says Sri Uttamur Swamy in his vyAkhyAnam]. It is His grace that we are born as human beings; in the birth as Srivaishnavan with an ability to be associated with AzhwAr Acharya works and thus be able to know the medicine and the doctor to get rid of our any more future births and be eternally at the shadow of Lotus of the Lord Sriman Narayanan for ever. Having blessed me so much, Please show abhaya mudra and dispel fear in me that I would be saved by You. The red skies are compared to the chakrA for expressing His grace due to which it is reddish and also due to the iruL tharumA jnAlam leaving and theLi visumbu thirunaadhu being in horizon, the sky is red. My Father! The Lord of ThirumalirunchOlai! The One who (made sure they are) destroyed the Kauravas enemies with a sankalpam to let your devotees- i.e. Paandavas live! From time immemorial, for ages after ages after many kalpams, the time has passed for me and today I (after suffering so many births) have been blessed with Your mercy and divine darshan. After being blessed with such a treasure, I will never ever agree for letting You go off me any more. My mind is always thinking of You. My Father! The lord of ThirumaalirunchOlai! The One who went to SONithapuram and cut the 1000 shoulders of bANAsuran! Even before my birth (in the womm), I was (blessed with your grace to keep) thinking of serving Your lotus feet alone. Having desired for that so long, I have come here at Your lotus feet and am blessed with your darshan in front of my eyes and in my mind. Sri Vishnuchitthar of SrivilliputthUr has sung these ten Pasurams on the most helpful, most merciful One, ThirumalirunchOlai Lord, the divya desam where everyone goes to bathe in the sacred ponds and the pay their obeisance to the Lord. These songs sung on the subject of serving the Lord at his lotus feet and the reciters of these ten PAsurams and those who can sing them will be blessed to be dAsars (servants – devotees) of the Lord who measured all worlds.
