From: "Pradeep Janakiraman"Date: Thu Nov 28, 2002 0:37am Subject: Re: desikan's vairagya panchakam To the best of my understanding, these verses were a spontaneous response to a request by "Vidyaranya" who was serving in the court of Krishna Deva Raya. Apparently, both Vidyaranya and Desika were friends from an young age and later Vidyaranya took to KrishnaDevaraaya's court patronage, while Desikan chose to live a simple life. But when Desikan's greatness was mentioned in the court by Vidyaranya, Krishnadevaraaya wanted to see him. Vidyaranya sent a message once, which Desikan refused, and then he sent he sent one more, in response to which Desikan composed these verses. In the 5th verse, he uses the word "Dhanam" 10 or 11 times in different contexts and its a master-piece.
