SwAmi VEdAnta DEsika's "NaichyAnusanthAnam" and "SAtvika AhamkAram " (As gleaned from his StOtras.) - Part 3 - SWAMI CHALLENGES! ===================================================== Dear Bhagavatas Kindly refer to "Part 3 - SWAMI CHALLENGES! An Introductory Note" - posted on 10th October 99. I am leaving out this to avoid repetition. You may read that to appreciate this posting in the proper perspective. Dasoham Anbil Ramaswamy ===================================================== Challenge3.18:"ARE YOUR PROMISES MERELY A 'WILL O' THE WISP?" ===================================================== saraNAgatha ithi janithE janavAdhEpi yadhi Achyuta! na rakshasi mAm / bhavEth kalu sAgara gOshah: sAgara pulinE thAdrusam thava vachanam // (Achyuta Sathakam SlOkam 98) Meaning "Oh! ADiyavarkku meyyanE! I do not know whether I did my Prapatti in the proper manner. But, people in the world believe that I have, indeed, done SaraNAgathi to you! Therefore, somehow or other, you have to protect me. Otherwise, these people will denounce you as one who had betrayed a "SaraNAgatha". Do you remember your open pledge on the seashore in the midst of a mammoth monkey battalion?- " I will not abandon those who surrendered to me, even if they had not done so *with full heart*" Let not your loud proclamations mingle with the meaningless noise of the sea waves. You have no escape from keeping up your plighted word on pain of incurring the odium and loss of reputation" Comment An adroit manner of compelling Lord's protection. AlavandAr in StOtra RatnAvaLI says - "tvadagrE saraNAgatham parAbhavO nAtha! na thE anuroopam" meaning "Oh! Natha! You are not given to bring humiliation to those who surrender to you" ================================================== To Continue - Challenge 3.19: "GIVE UP RESEARCH; DON'T RUIN YOUR REPUTATION!" ==================================================
