Mahalakshmi's Mercy
From the Bhakti List Archives

Dearest sri vaishNavALs, adiyEn madhava dAsan from singapore. While browsing the Bhakti Archives (which I always used to as and when I have time), I found myself safely landed in Sri Stavam posting of V.sadagopan.(Feb 96). What an excellent piece of posting! That reminded me of Sr Krishna Premi's upanyAsam. Once he narrated the following on Mahalakshmi's mercy: The parama lowkeekan manages to find time amidst his samsaaric troubles and problems, and is able to visit the Srirangam temple on a friday evening. He stands in a long queue for RanganAyaki's Darshan and after about 30 minutes, comes to see Her. The Piratti is wearing a Dark yellow (karumanjaL) pattu pudavai(silk sari) and looks magnificent with her AbaraNangaL. What a great sight our guy is blessed with on a friday evening! He is mesmerised by the beauty of thAyAr and raises his both hands above his head calling aloud "AMMAA THAAYE MAHALAKSHMI, RANGANAYAKI" with tears rolling down his cheeks; (At this time, Sri Krishna premi himself was having tears in his eyes; and I was observing others' eyes; Yeah! they too were having tears; (So far, I am not moved; How unfortunate not to be moved by this even!)) Mahalakshmi, has not yet looked at our guy, who is wonderstruck and standing with twenty five others in front of the Goddess. Why? Because our piratti is parama pativratai and does not even raise Her eyes to see other males.- Is that the interpretaion?- may be? Sri Krishna premi says "No. That is NOT the fact. She is the Mother. Akila jaganmAtharam; and asmath mAtharam; Mother for the Universe and for us, too. Why should a mother lower Her eyes in front of Her Children; even if She is a pativratai. The Reason in this case is : EN KUZHANDHAI EN EDHIRE NIRKIRAAN; AVANUDAIYA INDHA ANBUKKUM BHAKTIKKUM SAMAMAGA NAAN ENNA BADHILAGA KODUKKA IRUKKIRADHU" (My child is standing in front of me; What can I give him to equate his love and devotion to me) AND She is helpless and seraching still! Oh, I am lucky, friends; because, at that stage, I was not able to see the crowd; nor Sri Krishna Premi- My eyes, too were filled with tears; Sri RanganAyikA samEtha RanganAtha parabrahmaNE namah: Ram Ram madhava dAsan
