This is a very old Prakrit and Sanskrit derivation. In fact, Gaudiya Vaishnavas (such as Hare Krishnas) believe Govinda the cowherd to be an eternal name of the Lord since their name for paramapada is Goloka, where Krishna is present as in Brindaavan.
