How to identify a true bhAgavatha?
From the Bhakti List Archives

Sashtanga namaskarams to all Bhagavatas. I have been a silent reader and enjoyer of the Bhakti-list for quite some time. I have had this question within me for quite some time. Please advise on this. How can we identify a TRUE bhagavata? I know a little bit on this... A true bhagavatha has no ego, always considers himself as servants of other bhagavathas and yearns to do selfless kainkaryam to them etc .... But in this modern world, how can we tell a TRUE bhagavatha from others? This question has highlighted itself because of a personal experience I had a few weeks back. I know a very elderly person who is very well versed in philosophy and SriVaishnavism. He is an expert in Vedas and Upanishads. He performs Aradhanam to SrimanNarayana daily.I respected him very much till recently and considered him a true bhagavatha. But a few weeks back, he spoke very lowly about My Acharyan and My Acharya lineage. (I would not like to mention the name of the Matham/Ashramam I belong to, since this has created problems on the list in the past). I felt very hurt at that point but did not say anything at that time. But since that day, I have serious doubts.... I have not visited him since that episode... I request all the learned bhagavatas in the group to clarify and clear my doubts. If I am not wrong, doing service to an unworthy person is also not correct. My sincere apologies at the feet of all bhagavatas if I have written anything wrong.
