SrI: Dearest Srivaishnavas, [adiyEn was not well for three weeks with neck pain- could not read /write emails at home- which strains the body; hence, seek your forgiveness for delay] AzhwAr has now started enjoying again in the role of YasodhA, His child hood pranks, rearing the cattle; and before that he (she) enjoys His growing up; thannEraayirampiLLaikaLOdu thaLarn^adaiyittuvaruvaan ponnEyn^eyyodupaalamudhuNdu orupuLLuvanpoyyEthavazhum minnErn^uNNidaivanchamakaLkongaithuncha vaayvaiththapiraanE! annE! unnai_aRindhukoNdEn unakku_anchuvan_ammamtharavE. (2) 1. Oh Darling, the one who walks with faltering steps along with the thousand other friends of the same age (who were born around the same time as KaNNan)! The most naughtiest boy, who eats the gold [coloured] ghee, sweet milk etc., [behind] and now crawls [acting innocent in front of Yasodha] ¡V the unparalleled maayan ¡Vcheater! The Lord, who had sucked the breasts of the cunning lady, the lightning like waisted demoness Poothanai and made her fall! Oh ammA! Now I have realized who you are. I am scared of breastfeeding you. KaNNan is getting bigger; She is also perhaps losing milk.. So, she is telling some enjoyable excuses for not feeding Him that often perhaps. She tells, ¡§You run here and there, steal butter, milk, curd and eat. Now when you come approaching me, you are posing as if you are a little baby and crawl asking for ¡§ammam¡¨ (breast milk). You are capable of even sucking the life of the demoness. I know you. Hereafter I won¡¦t give ammam. I am scared. Here Yasodha calls KaNNan as ammA. Thiruvaymozhi Pillai refers to this in the fifth pasuram as mother (though here he refers this as more of an exclamation). You are the mother (for everyone). I am not? Who is to give milk to whom? ponpOlmanchanamaatti_amudhoottippOnEn varumaLavu_ippaal vanpaarachchakadam_iRachchaadi vadakkilakampukkirundhu minpOln^uNNidaiyaal_orukanniyai vERRuruvamseydhuvaiththa anbaa! unnai_aRindhukoNdEn unakku_anchuvan_ammamtharavE. 2. After having bathed and fed you, I had gone to Yamuna for my bath; and by the time I come back, you had kicked the heavier wheel (sakatam) and broke the same; [and later] you entered into the northern house and grabbed the right time to make a young girl appear different [to others as if she had just changed from virgin]. Oh lovable darling! I have known you; I am scared to give you ammam. The cart had much more than its weight on it; In spite of that, he kicked the same and broke the wheel. Without anything, he made the young girl appear to others ass different as if she had just been with KaNNan. [Also by the time people were shocked as to what had happened to the wheel and were talking to each other, He entered into the neighbour¡¦s house to perform that maayam:-) kummaayaththoduveNNeyvizhungik kudaththayirsaayththupparuki poymmaayamarudhaana_asuraraip ponRuviththu_inRun^eevandhaay immaayamvallapiLLain^ambee! unnai_enmakanEyenbarn^inRaar ammaa! unnai_aRindhukoNdEn unakku_anchuvan_ammamtharavE. 3. Along with some snacks (called kummaayam) he ate butter; he tilted the curd pots keeping them just near His face and drank everything; [being caught red handed], He was tied down to the mortar you entered in between the two marudha trees (the two asuras who had become trees due to curse) and broke them; Such Lord of most wonderful acts! Most auspicious Lord! Those who used to address you as my son, have stooped calling you so [after hearing of your such deeds] Oh sarvEswaran! I have known you. I am scared to breastfeed you. Even those who thought you are my son, have now stopped doing so [as they too have realized who you are] maiyaar_kaNdamadavaaychchiyarmakkaLai maiyanmaiseydhu_avar_pinpOy koyyaar_poondhukilpaRRiththanin^inRu kuRRampalapalaseydhaay poyyaa! unnaippuRampalapEsuva puththakaththukkuLakEttEn aiyaa! unnai_aRindhukoNdEn unakku_anchuvan_ammamtharavE. 4. When the collyrium applied girls [who had actually been attracted to you already] went to a place , you went behind them [without their knowledge], picked up their soft, thin dresses [that they had removed for taking bath], went and stood there. You performed many mischief and have declined that you have not done that at all! Such grandest deeds of yours ¡V I have realized and now I am scared of giving you breast milk. The first two lines talk about the vasthrAbaraNam. Also it may be interpreted as: when the girls [who had already been attracted to Him] go, he went behind each of them (taking a form) and caught hold of their soft dress; and performed various mischiefs. Those deeds are to be recorded in books for us to remember them and to be recited as Paaraayanamƒº being emperumaan¡¦s leelas muppOdhumkadaindheeNdiyaveNNeyinOdu thayirumvizhungi kappaalaayar_kaLkaaviRkoNarndha kalaththodusaayththupparuki meyppaaluNdazhupiLLaikaLpOla neevimmivimmiyazhukinRa appaa! unnai_aRindhukoNdEn unakku_anchuvan_ammamtharavE. 5. The butter that was made and gathered thrice a day; the curd were all eaten in their entirety by Him; and in between He tilts the milk pots [to His mouths] carried by cowherd boys ¡V being praised by everyone and in spite of eating and drinking all this to full stomach content, you now ask for breastmilk. Oh appA! Please leave me. I am scared of giving ammam karumbaarn^eeLvayalkaaykadhirchchen^n^elaik kaRRaan^iRaimaNdiththinna virumbaakkanRonRukoNdu viLanganiveezha_eRindhapiraanE! surumbaarmen_kuzhalkanniyoruththikkuch choozhvalaivaiththuththiriyum arambaa! unnai_aRindhukoNdEn unakku_anchuvan_ammamtharavE. 6. In the fertile fields, [in its neighbourhood], when the calves and cows were eating yearningly, you took [caught] the asura calf by its tail and threw at the viLAm [viLaam tree ; viLAm¡V a kind of fruit] ¡VOh most merciful One! Parama upakArakA! Oh the most mischief one, who has captivated a girl in a sugarcane field! I have known You; I am scared to give you ammum. Here, one may wonder as to where and how a sugarcane field appears suddenly. Sri Uttamur Swamy writes: Kaalidasa in Raghuvamsa, ¡§ikshucchAyA nishAdhinya: thasya gOpthur guNodhayam | aakumAragadhOdhgAtham sAligOpyO jaguryaSa: || [In the shadow of sugarcane field, from childhood days, the young girls taking care of paddy field, sing in praise of Rakshakan (their king). ] Similarly, though this was NOT sung for KaNNan, gOpya meaning king can mean KaNNan as wellƒº Thus, when they rear the cows and take care of fields respectively, they take shelter under sugarcane fields. Thus, KaNNan was spending His time with a gopa girl and has captivated her with His enchanting divine beauty and charm. That is when the vatsa (calf asura) struck. Quietly, he sneaked behind the calf and caught by its tail. She forgot to take care of the paddy field. He let the cows eat the paddies (ƒº ) and they both were talking and playing under the sugar cane field. He makes her forget the field completely. But this vatsAsura did not eat because his intention was different (to kill Kutti KaNNan). Tha is when KaNNan noticed as to why this calf is not making fortune when there is an opportunity to eat the paddy. Thus, KaNNan is so mischievous with cows, calf and the girl as well. What a great vyAkhyAnam by Swamy! [Swamy desikan follows the same like Kaalidasa in Hamsasandhesam[1-20]: ikshucchAyE kisalayamayam ¡K maruttaarmen_kuzhalkoNdupozhilpukku vaayvaiththu_avvaayar_thampaadi suruttaarmen_kuzhalkanniyarvandhu_unnaich chuRRumthozhan^inRasOdhi! poruttaayamilEn_emberumaan! unnaippeRRakuRRamallaal maRRingu arattaa! unnai_aRindhukoNdEn unakku_anchuvan_ammamtharavE. 7. [After describing what He did in the paddy fields in day time, now AzhwAr describes what He does at night in gardens.. ] Taking the divine, mellifluous muscical flute in His Hand, entering into the dense gardens, placing the flute over His lips; the fragrant flower adorned, tender and soft haired gopika girls leaving everyone at home, came running [listening to His music] from all four sides and pay their obeisance to You, Oh Param chudarE (ParanjyOthI!) EmpermAnE! There is not benefit that I am blessed with than having You as the son to me.. Oh kuRumbA! (mischief Boy) I have known You. I am scared to offer ammmum to You. He stood playing the flute and until all those girls came, He has His flute on His lips.. He stood for them to prostrate. [thozha¡K¡K ninRa jYothi¡K] Ayar tham paadi- In spite of Ayar stopping these girls, they still came¡K The moonlit night; divine music; and He took an individual form for each girl and played raasa leela with them. ¡§anganaa manganA mantharE mAdhava: ¡§. It was one whole jYothi maNdala. KaNNan multiplied himself in such a way, that there was a Kutti KaNNan between two gopikas. How wonderful was this devotion and love of Gopis for KaNNan! How beautiful it its utter divinity! How innocent and child like with complete lack of self consciousness! The gOpis are full of saatvic qualities. Their minds ever fixed on KaNNan. When parent begets a child, they get relations, and swarga lOkam etc.. Yasodha says she does not get even this by getting Him as her son. As He is the Lord (piRappili) and she will get a bypass of swarga as wellƒº Thus, she gets only a name that her son is such a mischievous jAra chOra sikhAmani vaaLaavaakilumkaaNakillaar piRarmakkaLaimaiyanmaiseydhu thOLaalittu_avarOduthiLaiththu neesollappadaadhanaseydhaay kELaar_aayar_kulaththavar_ippazhi kettEn! vaazhvillai nandhan kaaLaay! unnai_aRindhukoNdEn unakku_anchuvan_ammamtharavE. 8. Even when You do not do anything, You catch hold of the girls of those who do not like you [by their shoulders, hugging them] and play with them mischievously. People (of this self respected cowherd group) can not listen to such words of condemnation of such nature that they talk about you. I am doomed KaNNA. (kettEn). I have lost my life.. (name). vaazhvu illai.. Oh male child of NandhagOpA! I have leaarnt who You are and am scared to offer ammum to You. nandhaR kALaay bull of Nandhan- nandhaRkku ALaa- ruler of Nandhan.. The mothers go out to sell buttermilk; the fathers go out to rear cattle. Thus, You take that opportunity and loiter with the small girls of cowherd group when none is around. Thos who wish that you should get spoiled are given golden chances by You to talk about You. You behave that way doing such mischievous deeds. Those who like You, correct You by pointing your mischief, but you ignore and wander fearlessly . Oh cowherd Boy! I have known You and am scared to offer ammum to You. [sometimes, they come where You are; and You go where they are at home] thoththaar_poonguzhalkanniyoruththiyaich chOlaiththadamkoNdupukku muththaar_kongaipuNarndhu_iraan^aazhikai moovEzhusenRapinvandhaay oththaarkku_oththanapEsuvar_unnai urappavEn^aan_onRummaattEn . 10. [KaNNan says: They go somewhere else because of their work. And I go somewhere. How can you link that with my going. There is no connection- Yasodha now points at one incident when He was there with one girl full time.. ¡K] You went to charming dense garden with a flower adorned haired girl and hugged her jewel bedecked breasts for the full three yaamams (one night) and returned. People generally talk about everything and everyone. This time, it is giving them a chance to talk more¡K I am not capable of even raising my voice at You. Oh God ! atthA (deivamE) I hav realized who You are and am scared to offer ammum to You. Kanni orutthiyai. There are many; but one girl- KaNNan was fond of. She was not Nappinnai. Because Nappinnai was a kannigai in Gokulam (See ThiruppAvai vyAkhyanam by Sri Uttamur Swamy). Hence it could be someone else- perhaps Radha. ¡§Radha mAdhavayOr jayanthi yamunAnUlE raha: kELaya:¡¨- as described by north Indians- says Uttamur Swamy in his commentary. Now You come to me begging for food.. ammum.. ammum. You are atthan. I am scared of giving ammum to You not as because of dhUshaNam (scolding You); but because You are atthan; God- ParamAthmA. Sarva saksthan- Sarva sEshi. You own us. Hence, I know You and am scared of karaarmEnin^iRaththembiraanaik kadikamazhpoonguzhalaaychchi aaraa_innamudhuNNaththaruvann^aan ammamthaarEnenRamaaRRam paaraar_tholpukazhaanpudhuvaimannan pattar_piraan_sonnapaadal Eraarinnisaimaalaivallaar irudeekEsanadiyaarE. 11. Yasodha is blessed to be the mother of EmperumAn. She- the fragrant haired one- tells the dark rainy cloud coloured KaNNan ¡§I can give You any grand food [which is ArA amudhu for this ArA amudhan] but not this amudhu.. my breast milk ¡V in this ten. It is sung by Sri VilliputthUr Bhatta nAthan. Those who recite this musical ten will be blessed to serve Hrishikesan as dhAsabhUthars.
