A doubt on gothras
From the Bhakti List Archives

Hi all, I've a fundamental doubt on gothras. I've been told (I'm an Iyengar) that a person's gothra denotes his patriarchal lineage. Once that's accepted, I fail to understand how a lady's gothra changes after marriage. Since this is patriarchal, I can guess how a couple's child's gothra is ascertained, but a mid-life change of gothra of the lady seems mighty illogical. Could someone educate me on the reasons why this practice may have come into being? And justification for it, if any?
