thoo nilA muRRam - part 14 - "nagar vaLam" Dear bAgawathAs, In a very classical way our Sri nammAzhwAr describes the "vaLam" or the proseperity of this city as "seerAr sennal kavari veesum sezhu neer thiru kudanthai" ie., These paddy fields that are surrounding this place is so special that when the air that breezes past this paddy field a wetness or "eeram" comes to us. The sparsam of this "eera kARRu" or wet air, makes one's "uLLam" also very pleasant. It constantly reminds one of the prosperity of this place in terms of its rich "nel vaLam" or the rich paddy banks during harvest. A celestial expert must have done the town planning for this town in the olden days. The town has well planned roads and sqaure cutting roads around the temple resembles french city plan. There are so many tanks inside the city itself as reservoir for the kauveri river water. There are several gardens in and around every backyard and as well in public places. There are gardens where one can see jasmine kodi and beetle leaves kodis known as kodi thOttam. Constant water supply is needed to breed "kodi thOttams". There are many lilly ponds and lotus ponds. There are several kazhani or vAy kAl or a small branch of the river used for irrigation running all through the city as similar to the nurves running through the human body (*). There were and are many scholars who hailed from here. Many great AchAryAs have also incarnated in this holy city. There are many beautiful pAvaimAr or woman who match with the beauty of this city. The temple compund walls are huge and runs through the middle of the city as similar to a storng back bone. The city keeps growing in population and as well with modern facilities. There are several schools, and couple of colleges (one is the oldest of its kind in the whole state) and several theaters (for drAma and movie) and very huge vegetable market for the whole neighborhood villages (every one assemble here). This city's is immeasurable as similar to the Lord Sri amuthan's kalyAna gunAs. The bursting growth is sustained by the grace of the Lord Sri Amuthan. Sri kOmaLa vaLLi thAyAr samEtha Sri ArA amudhan thiruvadikaLE saraNam Sampath Rengarajan note: It is required to write about the city that attracted so many AzhwArs (of those days) and mahAns (of these days) simply due to its beauty. (*) Some of them that were constructed 350 years ago are dry, shame on kauveri water distribution polcies for the last 25 years. ******************************************************************** ----------------------- Where to Send Donations ----------------------- INDIA: Members of the group in India, Europe, Bahrain, Kuwait and Rest of the Middle East, and elsewhere in boolOgam may send their donations to: Cheques are payable to "The Secretary and Treasurer", mail to : Tiruppani committee", Sri L.Rajagopalan, MABT, Retd Pricipal, (Committee member) 12, Besant Road, KUMBAKONAM 612 001 UNITED STATES & CANADA: Checks should be made payable to "SMSA, Inc" Sri Vaishnava Seva Samithi c/o Smt.
