SrI:
SrImathE Ramanujaya namah:
Dearest Srivaishnavas,

AzhwAr first enjoyed the avatar of KrishNA. Then he enjoyed the divine
beauty of the infant KaNNan from toe to head as YasOdhA had enjoyed Him.
AzhwAr combined the description of the LordÂ’s ThirumEni with His leelAs
which happened later in His avatar. That must have made yasOdhA long for
enjoying such leelAs and narrating them to others. AzhwAr felt her longing
and now started singing in YasOdhAÂ’s role straight narrating the leelAs,
other avatars as well as calling DevEdnhran, Chathurmukha Brahma and others
to this sowseelya, sowlabhya ParamAthmA Kutti KaNNan. Also she has entered
into Divya Desams and sung on those perumALs as her own Kutti KaNNan.
“kongum kudanthaiyum kOttiyoorum pErum engum thirindhu viLaiyAdum en magan..
[ what a line! My son- Kutti KaNNan wanders here and there and plays in all
places like ThirukkOttiyoor, Thirukkudanthai, ThirupPEr, etc.. ]

AzhwAr thus sings as YasOdhA and sings lullaby to KaNNan ( thAlElO song)..
thAl –means the cheek (in Sanskrit). Also it can mean the tongue (in Tamil).
So if it is cheek, the mothers used to stop the child crying and making it
sleep by making sound with their inner mouth (cheek) or tongue.. uLuLu
aaayee..” and thereby the child stops crying and dozes off. The tongue and
the cheek join together (the word- thAl). Jeeyer (Sri Manavala Mamunigal
says : moving the tongue is thaalaattu.

Oh KaNNA! One who had come as Brahmachari Vamana! Chathurmukha Brahma,
desired to offer a gem stone bedecked, emerald laden (with diamond in the
center) golden small cute little colorful (to match your divine colour)
cradle. Oh ThirvikramA! who had measured the worlds! Take this poem (thAl
yEl..) ululu aayee.. (thAlElO)

You came as dwarf in Vamana avatar (and begged Mahabhali) to take the huge
Thrivikrama avatar to give back Devas their world. Now they want to pay
their gratitude it appears. The diamond is placed at the center of the
cradle to have the Lord on the diamond (bed). Or wherever the emerald stone
are laid, there the diamond stones are placed at the center surrounded by
emerald.

The silk clothing (peethAmbaram) worn around the divine body of KaNNan,
interspersed with (or interwoven with) the most beautiful jarigai, golden
ornaments (in the shape of maadhuLampazham- a kind of fruit) was offered by
Sivan (who rides on the bull and had the skull in his hand). Oh Lord who has
all worlds as your property (including Sivan)! DonÂ’t cry! Who measured the
universe! DonÂ’t cry dear!

Sivan came on Rishabam to show the world that he is none other than Sivan to
offer the Lord such Grandest PeethAmbharam. He is called Kaapaali (as he had
skull of Brahma in his hand stuck, the sin of which was cured by Sriman
Narayanan). DonÂ’t cry, dear, as you are the one who stopped the cry of
Rudran (by giving the name which he wanted, when he cried for names thus
naming him Rudran- one who cries).

My God- My Swamy- who has the divine chest where most beautiful Mahalakshmi
resides; who has the eyes of most charming red lotus colour; - To You,
KaNNA! DevEndran also offered the bright anklets (sathangai) for your short,
stout cute legs and stood aside happily. Oh red lotus eyed Lord! thalElO!

Here PiraaTTi is referred to because of her kataaksham (merciful, benevolent
glances) dEvEndhran attained that status, which was lost earlier.

All celestial demi gods wished to offer something or the other. They all
offered from the skies (as the Gokulam was smaller place and the number of
Devas was more) the conch (valampuri cchanghu- which was similar to Paancha
janyam.. ); the anklets for the red lotus like small feet of KaNNan; the
shoulder rings; wrist bands; the waist band; etc.. They simply rained them
which was the sight to behold!

The blemishlessly benevolent KubEra (vaisravaNan) brought the most brightest
pancha Ayudhas (five weapons) and the glittering necklace for the divine
chest, saying, “These will be most appropriate and charming for the Kutti
KaNnan.” He offered them and performed anjali mudrA standing at a distance
happily. Oh pristinely pure blue hued Lord! thalElO!

VaruNan, searched and looked for the most beautiful and most appropriate one
and offered the pearl (picked from the oceans) necklace and beautiful
bangles. Oh ParanjOthi! Who has the most shining and glittering crown!
(Establishing Your Parathvam)!

Oh Swamy! Swamy of the Divine MahAlakshmI! The Lord of Thirukkudanthai!
PiraaTTi Mahalakshmi, one who resides in the honey dripping lotus flower
sent the most fragrant garland of thuLasi leaves and flowers from fertile
“kaRpaka” tree made by herself with her hands lovingly for Kutti KaNNan. Oh
Lord of Periya PiraaTTi! DonÂ’t cry dear KaNNA! DonÂ’t. (you are crying
because you are separated from her; I know. But she has sent these garlands;
DonÂ’t cry)

BhUmi PiraaTTi for Acchuthan (one who never ever leaves the devotees in
peril) sent as Her offering. She sent the golden sword (that is inserted at
the waist above the PeethAmabharam), the silk cloth, golden bangles, the gem
stone forehead jewel (chutti), bright, glittering, golden flower with a
stem. Oh Lord who had sucked the poisonous breast! thalElO! Narayana! DonÂ’t
cry.. thalElO! (Narayana is referred to her for supporting the whole
BhUmi..- (ApOsanArA ithi prOkthA: ) and bringing back from troubled waters.

Durga, one who has the strong cruel, male elephant as vaahanam (vehicle),
brought the fragrant powder mixed with turmeric (manjaL- for smearing on the
ThirumEni- divine body of Kutti KaNNan); and also brought the kaajal (mai-
collyrium) for the large eyes of KaNNan and sindhUram (for adorning the
forehead of the Lord) and stood aside happily. Oh Swamy! DonÂ’t cry..
thalElO! One who reclines having Yoga nithrA in Srirangam! thaalElO!

Here VishNu durgA is referred to. This girl born to me, was taken to
Vasudevar, went up in the skies, when thorwn up by Kamsa, and said, “Why are
you torturing me? Someone is already born to kill you. “. She said
effortlessly. ThatÂ’s why KaNNan gets into so much trouble by asurAs. ThatÂ’s
why the word, “veyya” (cruel) is mentioned.

When the Lord was slightly raised from bed, as if he is getting up, AzhwAr
calls Him, Kudanthaik kidantHAnE. When He is fully reclining, Srirangam
Lord is addressed.

Place where divine vedic scholars reside- Sri VilliputthUr – (in which)
Bhattanathan (PeriyAzhwAr) has sung these lullaby pAsurams in the role of
YasOdhA, on Kutti KaNNan, one who had sucked the breasts of Poothanai-
appeared cunningly in the guise of a good, innocent mother. Those who recite
these PAsurams understanding its meanings will never have any hurdles or
sorrows.

The residents of SrivilliputthUr came to understand the actual true meanings
of Vedas due to the AzhwArÂ’s presence there, (who was blessed with the
vishEsha anugraham of the Lord and knew the meanings of Vedas straightaway).
Last ten, AzhwAr enjoyed the divine Body; in this ten he enjoys the
ornaments. And AzhwAr establishes the Parathvam (Supreme Lordship)
unambiguously by bringing in the gifts of Brahma, Rudran et al.
