SrI: SrImathe Ramanujaya namah: Dearest srivaishnavas, In this ten, AzhwAr enjoys KaNNan from the tip of the toe to the Head. Is he singing on his own? Or in Yasodha role? Or in the role of cowherd women? Or some other role.. If it is on his own, ¡§pavaLa vaayeer vandhu kaaNeerE..¡¨ (red coral mouthed (ladies)! Come and see- AzhwAr would not have described about young women. If it in the role of Yasodha, ¡§Kodhai kozhalALa yasOdhaikku pOtthandha; asOdhai vaLarkkinRa, YasOdhai mun sonna would not have been there. (meaning: Earlier, what YasOdhA said ). If it is in the role of other women, then ¡§pavaLa vayeer addressing others won¡¦t arise. That implies: it must have been in other way or anubhavam. Thiruvaymozhi Pillai said, ¡§YasOdhai PiraaTTi pEsina pAsuratthAlE aruLi seygiRaar (He composes based on what YasOdha¡¦s telling the cowherd women) Sri UttamUr Swamy adds: Sri Manavala maamunigaL elaborates this further: What YasOdhA had said to cowherd women those days- AzhwAr (in the role of a lady or in the anubhavam of a lady describes to ¡§her¡¨ (AzhwAr¡¦s) friends what YasOdhA had told her friends:- ) about her enjoyment of Kutti KaNNan from the toe to the Head. ¡§. Let us enjoy what PeriyAzhwAr (in lady form) addressing her friends on her enjoyment of the Lord¡¦s Divine Beauty from the toe to the Head in 20 Pasurams + 1 phalasruthi. (21 in all) 1. seedhak kadaluL amudhanna dEvaki kOdhaikkuzhalaaLa sOdhaiiku pOtthandha pedhai kuzhavi piditthuch chuvaitthuNNum paadhak kamalangaL kaaNeerE pavaLa vayeer vandhu kaNeerE. The cool ocean ¡V from which arose the nectar ; that nectar like Davaki (perhaps like Lalshmi amsam- so godly; saatvIki and beautiful); by such Devaki- (the baby was) given to the mosr fragrant flower bedecked haired YasOdhA. That poor child ¡§pedhai kuzhandhai¡¨) is holding with its small tiny fingers His little lotus feet and enjoys chewing and sucking it. Look at that, Oh coral mouthed (friends)! Come and see. Here Deavki herself is like Lakshmi form (so beautiful) and nectarine. The nectar (instiable One- ArA amudham) that comes out of this nectar- How sweet it would have been! And He tastes His feet and enjoys chewing the lotus feet! How sweetest that must have been! It appears the Lord wondered as to what these lotus feet are, as they attaract so much attention to the devotees! (ParamaikAnthins); These lotus feet are not only capable of removing sins; and paapams; they are also sweet and great to behold and enjoy. It is rarest to get the combination of both; what is good is not liked; except for the lotus feet. Everyone likes it; let us see how sweet it is and He takes it (which is thEnE malarum thiruppAtham) in his little hand and shoves into His little coral mouth. Also, perhaps, He wants to give food to the jiva prabanjam in His stomach with His lotus feet. AzhwAr addresses ¡§pavaLa vaayeer! Meaning: Red coral mouthed! i.e. When you see the little Kutti having that sweet Lotus feet in His mouth, you all would love to do that to put His lotus feet into your mouth and tasteƒº says Sri Uttamur Swamy. 2. mutthum maNiyum vayiramum nanponnum thatthip pathitthuth thalaipeydhaaRpOl patthuviralum maNivaNNan paadhangaL muttham irundhavaa kaaNeerE oNNudhaleer vandhu kaaNeerE. The most valuable pearl, diamond, sapphire, gold are all arranged so closely and alternatively and beautifully as the little fingers in the toes of blue hued maNivaNNan ¡V Look at that divine beauty in His cute little fingers! Oh glowing foreheaded (ones)! Come and see! In the earlier PAsuram underneath of the Lotus feet is shown to us (when he lifts it and sucks); now the fingers on the top (in His toes) described. 3. paNaitthOLiLavaaycchi paalpaayndha kongai aNaitthAravuNdu kidatthavippiLLai iNaikkAlil veLLitthaLai ninRilangum kaNaikkAlirundhavaa kaaNeerE kaarigaiyeer vandhu kaaNeerE. The bamboo shouldered YasOdhA (aaycchi- cowherd lady¡¦s)¡¦s breasts were hugged and fondled by His small little Hands while sucking the milk to His stomach full; and now He is lying down (with full stomach- due to exhaustion of drinking). This boy¡¦s small pair of ankles, with silver anklets ¡V look at the way it is lying standstill and shining/glittering just above the lotus feet! Oh pretty ladies! Come and see. 4. uzhandhaL naRuney orOthaDAvuNNa izhandhaaL yerivinaal eertthu yezhil matthin pazhan thaambaalOcchap bhayatthaal thavazhndhaan muzhanthAL irundhavaa kaaNeerE mugizh mulaiyeer vandhu kaaNeerE. YasOdhA (who had taken so much efforts to make and collect the ghee); lost one by one every pot of fragrant Ghee; and angered terribly by it; pulled and dragged the Kutti KaNNan (the culprit) and attempted to beat Him with the matthu (stick that is used to churn the curd to get butter). While she did that, our little Lord with quivering lips, moist eyes, scarred face, bent and kneeled down and crawled on the ground with His knees to move away from there (in order to escape the ¡§adi¡¨- beating). Oh large breasted ladies! Come and see His knees! Having taken so much effort (penannce) When she lost the ghee; she did not bother about the Ghee (what would it have done to the Baby ¡V having eaten so much! Should not die! ¡V so she though she has lost Him) ¡Vsays Sri UttamUr Swamy in his vyAkhyAnam. 5. piRangiyapEycchi mulaisuvaitthu uNdittu uRanguvaanpOlEkidantha ippiLLai maRankoLiraNyan maarvaimun keeNdaan kuRangugaLai vandhu kaaNeerE kuvimulaiyeer bandhu kaaNeerE. In mother¡¦s guise (cunningly to kill Him) ¡V came Poothanai (the demon ¡VpEycchi) ¡V this little darling (of ours) - look at the way He pretends to be sleeping after having enjoyed sucking the breast milk (along with the life) of Poothanai (from her poisonous breasts ¡V lying on her thighs) Look at the thighs of His- who had torn open the chest of hiraNyan then (during His NrusimhAvataar). Oh round breasted ladies! Come and see. Here, AzhwAr beautifully refers to thighs; i.e. The Kutti KaNNan sucked the life of Poothanai lying down on her thighs; while He killed HiraNyan, placing him on His thighs. Kuvimulaiueer- Round firm breasted ones- AzhwAr mentions this because, when Poothanai¡¦s poisonous breasts have become worn out and life less (as He sucks); These BhAgawathas with love and affection for KuttI Kannan have gained strengths in their breasts. Both due to their mind set only (says Sri UttamUr Swamy) 6. matthak kaLiRRu vasudEvar thammudai chittham piriyaatha dEvakithan vayiRRil atthatthin patthAmnaaL thOnRiya acchuthan muttham irndhavaa kaaNeerE mugizh nagaiyeer vandhu kaaNeerE. The strong elephants owned by Vasudevar- His sahadharmiNi Devaki- who never differs or disagrees with him; from her womb, came this Acchuthan (Lord) on the tenth day of Hastham (i.e Rohini- tenth star from Hastham) ¡V Look at His beautiful anga (muttham) oh smiling ones! Come and see. Here AzhwAr refers to tenth day of Hastham -for hiding his janma nakshathram so that the enemies do not come to know that we are talking about KaNNan. Even when Vasudevar¡¦s such great wealth was confiscated (by Kamsa) and imprisoned, Devaki was with him only and provided support. Hence, the Kutti Yaanai (elephant) came out of her for her good nature. Muttham can mean muktham- one that is left out (meaning- the male organ). When He was describing from toe to the Head, the one that is generally left out- Thus, the ladies out of shyness could not hide their smiles; AzhwAr addresses them ¡§mugizh nagaiyeer! Vandhu kaaNeerE.. Muttam ¡V also may refer to pearl denoting the little organ of Kutti. (later AzhwAr is going to say- vattu naduvE vaLarginRa maaNikka mottu¡K.chottu chottenna thuLikka thuLikka kuutan vandhennai puRam pulguvaan¡¦ Govindhan vandhu ennai puRam pulguvaan..) 7. irungaimmathakkaLiReerginRavanai parungip paRitthuk koNdOduparamanRan nerungupavaLamumnEr kaaNummutthum marungumirundhavaa kaaNeerE vaaNuthaleer vandhu kaaNeerE. [When the elephant and little elephant were referred in last pAsuram, Kuvalyeepeetam comes to AzhwAr¡¦s mind] The tusker of the large trunk elephant (by name Kuvalayeepeetm) placed by Kamsa to kill KaNNan (when KaNNan went to Kamsa¡¦s palace) was broken and plucked by KaNNan in order to kill the mahout who sent and asked the elephant (to kill KaNNan). Then He (along with that tusker in hand, with Balarama having the other tusker plucked by him) went inside (to fight with wrestlers Chanooran and Mushtikan and kill them too). Look at the waist band (araijnAN kayiRu- a small threaded thin rope) along with pearl, corals tied to it. Come and enjoy Oh bright foreheaded ones (due to the vertical Urdhva puNdram on it) 8. vandhamalaikuzhaatthaivaliseydhu thandhak kaLiRupOl thane viLaiyaadum nandhan madhalaikku nanRumazhagiya undhiirundhavaa kaNeerE oLiyizhaiyeer vandhu kaaNeerE. Like a little male elephant, He controls His peers (boy friends) and plays singly (enjoying all by Himself)- This Nandha kumAran (son of Nandhan)- has got the most beautiful Navel showing off there. Look at that. Come and see, oh shinning ornament adorned ladies! Here, KaNNan control the boys with his force or by His beauty and plays (anjoys all alone); Also one can infer that when there are many cowherd small, Kutti boys and girls Playing, KaNNan simply brushes the boys aside and He alone enjoys playing (bAla kreetai) with Kutti girls ( ƒº pollAdhu Kutti KaNNan). OR 1000 boys on one side and He is on the other side to play can also be meant. (says SrI UttamUr Swamy) 9. adhirunkadal niRavaNNanaiaaycchi madhuramulaiyootti vanchitthu vaitthu padhaRappadAmE pazhanthAmbAlArttha udharamirundhavaa kaaNeerE.. The cowherd lady YasOdhA- calls the Kutti KaNNan who is like a noisy wavy blue hued deep ocean colour, near her for sweet breast milk and while He has started sucking the same and drinking without being aware of the danger involved, she is looking for any kind of rope nearby and found only an old one (so that this is the right time for her to catch Him for all His mischief and she had called Him for feeding Him, only with that intent) Srimad Bhagawatham mentions about this incident in a slightly different manner. Here it is: YasOdhA churns the curd and gets veNNai (butter). KaNNan comes there and holds the matthu (stick sued for churning) and asks for breastmilk. She takes pity on Him and breastfeeds Him. She realizes (while He drinks) that the milk has been boiled at the stove and hence leaves Him there and rushes to the kitchen. (Big palace and hence must have been a different roomƒº afar. In the meanwhile our Kutti has played His tricks: All has been eaten and also distributed to the money which came nearby. The pot is also broken with all curd spilled on the floor too. YasOdhA come back to get shocked at this mess. She controls her anger; pretends as if nothing has happened; starts her breastfeed again (this time with an intent to catch him) and then look for a rope to tie him down. ƒº 10. perumaauraliR piNippuNdirundhu a~ng kirumAmarudha miRuttha vippiLLai kurumaamaNip pooNkulaavith thigazhum thirumaarvirundhavaa kaaNeerE SEyizhaiyeer vandhu kaaNeerE. To a huge sized mortar, got tied to; till She left that place, He was standing standstill. Then, He went crawling in between the two marduha trees (which were outside) to befall them on the ground. Such greatest Boy is He; Look at His glittering, bright Srivathsa sthalam, (His Divine Chest) where heavy, big gem stone (kuru maa maNi) is worn. Look at that Chest, Oh ladies (wearing ornaments)! Come and see. Kuru- the name for brightness as well as greatness. The ornament gem stone (RathnaabharaNam ) shines like Srivatsam ¡V says ThiruvaaymozhippiLLai. Sri Kausthubham is the ornament (SrI kautthuvamaagiRa AbharaNam) ¡V says Sri ManavalamaamunigaL. (as commented beautifully in Sri UttamUr Swamy¡¦s commentary referrinmg Poorvars¡¦ vyAkhyAnams ) Remaining 11 PAsurams in next post.
