This is sanctioned by the Dharma Sastras themselves. Sadly, due to ignorance, this practice has become nearly extinct these days. Kshatriyas have to also undergo the Upanayana cermony and wear poonul, which is signifies the start of learning. This is also valid for Vaishyas as well. To become an Archaka, you will need to abide by the Pancharatra Agama which is the protocol(set of rules and procedures) that govern temple worship. The Pancharatra Agama places NO RESTRICTION on a person. EVERYONE from EVERY CASTE is eligible to undergo initiation according to the Pancharatra Agama. For those who do not have a familial Dharma Sastra, the Pancharatra Agama substitutes that. All samskarams like birth rites, death rites and all will be governed by the Pancharatra Agamas. As Sri Narasimhan Kannan said, there is no specific injunction that prevents one from becoming an archaka. But since the practice has been nearly extinct for some time now, it will take a lot of effort to revive it. I would suggest you to contact any Sri Vaishnava acharya close to your place. Please write back to me if you need help regarding this. BTW, about Parashurama, he was a baddha jiivatma who was empowered by the Lord (i.e the Lord invested divine power into that Brahmana) to destroy the arrogance and pride of the king of that time. The purnAvatarams of the Lord are Narasimhar, Ramar and Kannan.
