Dear Sir, I quote some of the meanings etc. of alwars as known to vaishnavas in Maharashtra, Gujarat, Rajasthan and other places: " ........The alwars of the south are God-intoxicated mystics. The group known as alwars are constantly in divine communion with SriHari. The name alwar means - one who presides. The alwars are spread all over south. Their chief main 12 are similar to the chief 24 Jina-tirthankaras of the jains, though there still are jinas. The descendents of alwars are alive still today. The alwar religious sect was so powerful in its reach that all other vaishnava devotees after them can be said to be copies or copies of copies of their style - just living by the names of SriHari......." Please refer especially to the Swaminarayan literature of Gujarat-Saurashtra as well as the vaishnava devotional literature of Rajasthan.
