From the Bhakti List Archives
• March 27, 2001
Dear BhakthAs: There are number of excellent write ups on Thiruvaimozhi in the Bhakthi list archives. The Vaishnava home page maintianed by Sri Mani Varadarajan and the Sri Ramanujar home pages maintained by Srimans Madhavakkannan and Achutharaman of Singapore ( http://members.tripod.com/~Sriramanujar/namm.html) contain many pertinent articles on AzhwArs in general and Swamy NammAzhwAr in particular. Some articles cover literal meanings (Sri MadhavakkaNnan's excellent postings) archived in Bahrain home pages of Sri Ramadurai Venkat with the URL: http://www.Sriviahsnava.com/prabandham.html / others elaborate on individual decads on dhivya dEsams . Yet others dwell very well on the links between the Tamil MaRai and Sanskrit Vedams and Upanishads (the ongoing insightful series by Sri Sadagopan Iyengar of Chennai)and others deal with the Life and works of Swamy NammAzhwAr : http://members.tripod.com/~Sriramanujar/namm.html/ Inview of these abundant resources besides the classical commentaries of PoorvAchAryAs , adiyEn will focus on the source Veda manthrams from Saama Vedam and other Vedams and leave it to the reader to make the connections to the matching individual passages of ThiruvAimozhi(TVM). This will provide a complimentary aspect to the series by Sri Sadagopan Iyengar of Chennai.adiyEn would like Sri Sdagopan Iyengar to continue his excellent series. It is the tradition to consider TVM as the essence of Saama vedam;in reality, the tatthvams covered by TVM are relatable to mathrams from all the Four VedAs. Examples of the usage of same manthrAs by different Vedams will be included to indicate the common threads of prayers to the Supreme Being in all the VedAs and how they unite to form the sacred Vedic fabric.adiyEn will use Saayana BhAshyam and other commentaries on the Vedams by Sri Satya Prakash Sarasvathi swamy under the auspices of the Delhi Vedic Trust. VedhAbhimAnis are indebted to Sriman A.Krishnan of Srirangam for his leadership to record all the veda SamhithAs and also to publish the English translations of the Veda manthrams . In this context , we have to recall that Rg Vedam stands for JnAnam or Fundamental Knowledge. The Yajur Vedam instructs us as how to apply that fundamental knowledge for our advantages , individual and that of the community. Yajur Vedam can thus be considered as Applied Knowledge (Phalan). Saama Vedam is all about the lyrical, emotional and aesthetic singing of the glories of the Supreme being (addressed as Indra and Agni). The Atharva Vedam stands for the perfection and preservation of the Fundamental knowledge derived from Rg Vedam. Selected short list of examples of the Vedic passages that connect to the thoughts housed in the Prabhandhams of Vedam tamizh seytha MaaRan (Swamy NammAzhwAr) will be covered in the next posting .
