Srimate SrivanSatakopa Sri Vedanta Desika Yatindra Mahadesikaya nama: Teliyatha Marai Nilangal Teligindrome-6 The second mantra of the Narayanopanishad runs as follows- “Yesmin itham sanchavichaiti sarvam yesmin dEvA adhi visvE nishEdu:\\ tadEva bhootam tadu bhavyamA idam tat aksharE paramE vyOman\” The first part of this mantra reaffirms the role of Brahman as the Supreme Creator and Destroyer, which we saw earlier in the Bhriguvalli (YatO vA imAni bhootAni jAyantE-Yena jAtAni jeevanti- Yet prayantyabhi samvisanti). At the time of PralayA,all sentient and non-sentient beings enter the Brahman as their final resting place. There, stripped of their individually distinguishing characteristics, they assume the form of undifferentiated matter. At the time of creation, Paramatma, out of His infinite mercy, bestows them with individual names and forms, commensurate with their Karma, to enable them to try to redeem themselves from the unending cycle of births and deaths.(Achit avisishtAn pralaYe jantoon avalOkya jAta nirvEda-karana kalEbara yOgam vitarasi vrishasailanAtha karuNE tvam ). The aforesaid processes of creation and destruction find frequent mention in Tiruvaimozhi, thus- “aaviyum aakkaiyum tAnE, azhippOdu aLippavan tAnE” “Yemmaiyum Ezhulagum ninnuLLE tOtriya iraivA » « Ezhulagum koLLum vaLLal val vayitru peruman » « ulagugaL okkavE vizhungi pugundAn » « yevayum yevarum tannuLLE aagiyum aakkiyum kAkkum » « murayAl ivvulagam padaitthu idanthu undu umizhndu aLandAi » « poruLendru ivvulagam padaitthavan » « pozhilEzhum unda endAi » « yevarum yAvaiyum ellA poruLum kavarvindri tannuL odunga nindra pavarkoL gnAna veLLa chudar moorti » etc.,etc. The next quarter of the mantra, »YesmindEvA adhi visvE nishEdu:”, indicates that all devAs, however high their position, have Paramatma as their refuge (aashraya),and all of them derive their powers and aishwarya from Him.Chaturmukha BrahmA, Shiva, Indra and everyone of the 33 crore devAs owe their fiefdom to Him. Azhwar, who never misses the opportunity to proclaim Emperuman’s paratvam, translates this mantra variously as follows- “pEsa nindra sivanukkum piraman tanakkum pirarkkum nAyakan avanE » « nirutthinAn deivangaLAga at deivanAyakan tAnE » « pirayEru sadayAnum nAnmukanum indiranum irayAdal arindEttha veetriritthal idu viyappE » « vAnavar aadi engo,vAnavar deivam engo » “terivariya sivan piraman amararkOn panindu Etthum viri pugazhAn” « uruvadAvadu etthEvum avai aagia matrum tanpAl maruvil moortiyOdu otthu nindra vaNNam nirkavE » etc. to be continued-dasan, sadagopan.
