Srimate SrivanSatakopa Sri Vedanta Desika Yatindra Maha Desikaya Nama: TeliyAtha Marai NilangaL TeligindrOmE –3 Going back to the Anandavalli of the TaittiriyOpanishad, there is a short but beautiful catalogue of Brahman’s attributes at the very beginning- “Satyam, GnAnam, Anantam Brahma”. Here, Satyam refers to the characteristics of indestructibility and immutability-the Brahman is not subject to any “vikArA”, unlike other chetana and achetana objects. The true purport of this kalyAna gunA is brought out by Sri NammAzhwar as follows- “Ninainda ellA poruLkatkum vitthAi, mudalil chidayAmE” “yEtra kEdavai illavan” etc. The next, « GnAnam »,denotes the omniscience of Brahman, knowledge which does not expand or contract (unlike that of a jeevA).Listen then to the Azhwar – “aarnda gnAna chudarAgi agalam keezh mEl aLavirandu” “pavarkoL gnAna veLLa chuddar murthy” etc. « Anantam » refers to limitlessness-Brahman is unlimited by time, place or object. ParamAtmA is present always ,at all places and in all objects.(Kala, dEsa,vastu paricchEda rAhityam). Sri Nammazhwar puts this succinctly thus- “karanda sil idam thorum idam tigazh porul thorum karandu engum paranduLan ivai unda karanE” “aam avai aayavai aay nindra avarE”-the economy of words is to be appreciated here, as what could fill pages, has been explained with inimitable clarity, in a few words. The word “Anantam” could also be taken to mean the endlessness of His auspicious qualities.(“Ananta kalyAna guna ganougha mahArnavam” “BahavO nripa kalyAna gunA: putrasya santi tE”).The countlessness of His attributes is portrayed by Kurugur Nambi thus- “eN perukkannalatthu oN porul eerila” “ellaiil annalam pulgu pattrattrE” « kaNakkaru nalatthanan andamil aadi em bhagavan » “eppAl evarkkum nalatthAl uyarndu uyarndu” to be continued-dasan,sadagopan.
