SrI: Dearest Srivaishnavas, The little darling of YasOdhA now is able to get up and stand still and need not use any support to hold on to. Kutti KaNNan is able to take faltering short, small steps now. He has really grown now. And that is the beauty to behold in our eyes. AzhwAr immerses himself in that charming KaNNan taking thaLar nadai (faltering steps) in the role of yasOdhA. thodar sangilikaisalaarbilaarennath thoonguponmaNiyolippa padumummathappunalsOra vaaraNam_paiyan^inRu_oorvathupOl udankoodikkiNkiNiyaaravaarippa udaimaNipaRaikaRanga thadandhaaLiNaikoNdusaarngapaaNi thaLarn^adain^adavaanO. The elephant (the angry one- from whose forehead waters flow down- madha jalam) when it walks gracefully, the shackles that are around it moves here and there and makes lots of noise; Kutti KaNNan (AaN singam) walks and takes short steps and the kiNkiNi (Golden waist ornament made of bells) makes musical sound as He walks. The well spread short feet need to make more steps (for us to hear those musical sound). The elephant generally attempts to walk effortlessly. When the four legs are tied with iron shackles, it takes short, faltering steps (else it will fall). Our KaNNan (Kutti KaNNan) is just learning to walk. He takes first few steps just like the male elephant. thaaL koNdu- using feet, please walk faltering steps. Not with feet.. using feet- meaning: Attempt with great effort, KaNNA! And walk. sekkaridain^unikkombilthOnRum siRupiRaimuLaipOla nakkasendhuvarvaayththiNNaimeethE naLirveNpalmuLaiyilaka akkuvadamuduththu_aamaiththaalipooNda anandhasayanan thakkamaamaNivaNNanvaasuthEvan thaLarn^adain^adavaanO. KaNNan- with His cool, small, white milky teeth (those little ones in the top and at the bottom – two each) inside the red coral mouth, like the small young moon hiding at the top of and behind the tree branch in the sky; - He is the darling son of Vasudeva; blue hued Lord- wearing divine ornaments and reclining on AdisEshan (due to which He is Parabrahman); He wears Amaithaali around His neck and araijnAN around His waist- May he walk faltering steps spreading luster from His teeth! The moon without touching the creeper, the creeper shines. Similiarly, the tooth is so small, that it does not even touch the lips. And the lips shine and teeth spread luster outside. – Says Sri UttamUr Swamy so beautifully. minnukkodiyum_OrveNthingaLum soozhparivEdamumaay pinnalthulangum_arasilaiyum peethakachchiRRaadaiyodum minnilpolindhadhOr_kaarmukilpOlak kazhuththiNilkaaRaiyodum thannilpolindha_irudeekEsan thaLarn^adain^adavaanO. By His own self- He is grand and Greatest (Parathvam); This HrishIkEsan- KaNNan- (making them appear as if these ornaments are mere waste for Him) wears the ornaments- Golden waist rope (arai vadam), shining small silk cloth (peethAmbharam) and the golden leaf- arasilai- like the faultless, blemishless mixture of moon and lightning, (around the dark clouds- which is he); wearing the necklace around His dark cloud color like beautiful neck, May he walk faltering steps! kannaRkudamthiRandhaloththooRik kaNakaNasiriththuvandhu munvandhun^inRumuththamtharum enmukilvaNNan_thirumaarvan thannaippeRRERkuththanvaayamudhamthandhu ennaiththaLirppikkinRaan thanneRRumaaRRalar_thalaikaLmeethE thaLarn^adain^adavaanO. This little darling baby of mine- blue hued coloured Lord- having MahAlakshmi in His chest – KaNNan- hugs me and showers His sweet kisses coming in front of me- laughing and giggling to the glory- like the full sugar cane juice pot has been punctured at its bottom making “gala gala sound.. and flowing out.. He makes such sound giggling and kisses showing me with sugarcane juice (so sweet).. By giving such nectar to me, who is His mother, May He walk faltering steps on the heads of enemies! When a small child laughs, it will not be able to control its saliva flowing out. With such giggle, and saliva flowing out, he hugs and kisses her. If he comes without laughing, it should have been just lips touching her. Here, now it is the wide open mouth with all those insatiable waters showering her with kisses. (deiva nangai yasOdhai peRRAL)- what a great anubhavam of Sri UttamUr Swamy quoting from Poorvacharyas. munnalOrveLLipperumalaikkuttan modumoduviraindhOda pinnaiththodarndhathOr_karumalaikkuttan peyarndhadiyiduvathupOl panniyulakamparaviyOvaap pukazhppaladhEvanennum thann^ambiyOdappin_koodachchelvaan thaLarn^adain^adavaanO. [this is a lovely scene!]. In the front, like the unparalleled silver mountain, he runs fast and quick (Balaraman); and behind Him, walks talking steps slowly and falteringly, is the dark mountain (KaNNan).. (after having eaten stomach full of butter and curd, ghee- he is not able to run- Sri Velukkudi Krishnan used to say). Unable to comprehend, He manifests the whole worlds and is the darling younger brother of Balaraman, who is also of unparalleled fame and runs fast; following him is our darling- May he walks faltering steps behind Balaraman! orukaalilsangu_orukaalilsakkaram uLLadipoRiththamaindha irukaalumkoNdu_angangu_ezhuthinaaRpOl ilachchinaipadan^adandhu perukaan^inRa_inbaveLLaththinmEl pinnaiyumpeythupeythu karukaarkkadalvaNNan_kaamar_thaathai thaLarn^adain^adavaanO. KaNNan- who is of the dark, blue hued, ocean like colour; who is the father of manmathan (Pradhyumnan); marks the places where He walks with Sanghu and ChakrA, which are there in His feet. Oru kaalil sanghu; oru kaalil sakkaram.. Thereby the entire place is full of Sanghu and ChakrA marks on the ground. May he walk faltering steps further more giving (us) lots of Anandham! When KaNNan walks there is great amount of joy! When the marks of Sanghu, ChakrA are seen wherever He walks, the joy is immeasurable! It is rain of joy! Anandha varsham! He is dark coloured like the blue dark ocean and hence gives rise to rains (of joy!) padar_pangayamalarvaayn^ekizhap panipadusiRuthuLipOl idangoNdasevvaayooRiyooRi iRRiRRuveezhan^inRu kadunchEkkazhuththinmaNikkuralpOl udaimaNikaNakaNena thadandhaaLinaikoNdusaarngapaaNi thaLarn^adain^adavaanO. KaNNan- who has the bow in His Hands – when he walks taking such short, faltering steps, due to His effort and concentrating not to fall, His mouth is wide open, and the Saliva keeps flowing out like a continuous flow of water from mouth.. The nectar that comes out from red coral mouth is like the honey droplets found inside the just opened freshly bloomed red lotus flower. This SaarangapaaNi- walks making sound from His waist rope small bells in eth golden ornament- like the twangs of huge bull’s bell tied around its neck.. (when it walks). May He walk taking such faltering steps! pakkamkarunchiRuppaaRaimeethE aruvikaLpakarndhanaiya akkuvadamizhindhERiththaazha aNiyalkulpudaipeyara makkaLulakinilpeydhaRiyaa maNikkuzhaviyuruvin thakkamaamaNivaNNanvaasuthEvan thaLarn^adain^adavaanO. This Paravsudevan- blue hued Lord- who is the form of innocent darling child – in its most beautiful form- KaNNan- showering rains of joy to all human beings on the earth by his mere presence; like the water that falls from the mountain top, splashing everywhere high and low, the waist ornament with its bells, and pearls, splashing and dangling everywhere high and low while he takes those beautiful, short, faltering steps. May he walk making those ornaments look more beautiful by taking such faltering steps! Also it can mean: raining (creating) people on the earth, and also taking this innocent child with impish charm, this Paravsudevan, takes those steps. veNpuzhuthimElpeythukoNdaLaindhathOr vEzhaththin_karunganRupOl theNpuzhuthiyaadiththirivikkiraman siRupukar_padaviyarththu oNpOdhalar_kamalachchiRukkaaluraiththu onRumn^OvaamE thaNpOdhukoNdathavisinmeethE thaLarn^adain^adavaanO. Trivikraman- who took three steps to measure the worlds;- is throwing the sand on his own body and head playing in the streets; Like a small male elephant, playing in the streets with its trunk, He plays. He also sweats and the muddy sweat shining so beautifully on His dark divine body; with those small red lotus just bloomed flower-like Lotus Feet, May he walk taking those steps on the bed of cool flowers without hurting His feet! Once, the entire earth was at His feet; Today, the entire body is full of sand. He should not walk there on the stone and thorns; hence, AzhwAr has organized a bed of cool, fragrant flowers; he asks the lord to get up from sands and start walking on those flowers! thirain^eerchchandhiramaNdalampOl sengaNmaalkEsavan than thirun^eermukaththuththulangusutti thikazhndhengumpudaipeyara perun^eerththiraiyezhukangaiyilum periyadhOr_theerththabalam tharun^eer siRuchchaNNamthuLLamsOrath thaLarn^adain^adavaanO. Red lotus eyed lord- dark colored Kesavan- On his most beautiful charing face, with his forehead ornament (Chutti) spreading its luster everywhere while He walks; due to the great effort He takes to take those small steps for walking, there is a small droplet of water dropping from His genital, which are more scared than the Gangaa theertham; unparalleled one which can grant everything (to those who just see even; Ganga can grant only when taking bath; Here mere darshan is enough- says Sri UttamUr Swamy). May he walk taking such short faltering steps! aayar_kulaththinilvandhuthOnRiya anchanavaNNan_thannai thaayarmakizha_onnaar_thaLarath thaLarn^adain^adandhadhanai vEyar_pukazhvittuchiththan seeraalviriththana_uraikkavallaar maayanmaNivaNNan_thaaLpaNiyum makkaLaippeRuvaar_kaLE. About the dark colured Lord taking those faltering steps, Sri VilliputthUr’s Vittuchitthan (without the knowledge) came to MathurA and enjoyed KaNNan being in the group of cowherd folks; - means: He sang this ten about KaNnan’s walking to the joy of Rohini, YasOdhA, and other motherly folks in MathurA. Those who can recite (or read this translation:-) will be blessed with sons (or children) who will prostrate at the feet of this blue hued Lord and the most mysterious and most wonderful Lord- Kutti kaNNan.
