SrI: Dearest Srivaishnavas, The little darling of YasOdhA now is able to get up and stand still and need not use any support to hold on to. Both hands are free. The child is excited and so are the parents. The child joins both hands and claps with joy. That is called “sappANi”. Perhaps, sahapaaNi from Sanskrit meaning joined “paaNi” hands. kaigaLAl sappAni- means: Clap with your hands. Here AzhwAr (just like YasOdhA enjoys) asks the Kutti to clap hands. maaNikkakkiN_kiNiyaarppa marunginmEl aaNipponnaalseytha aayponnudaimaNi pENippavaLavaay muththilanga paNdu KaaNikoNdakaikaLaalsappaaNi karunguzhalkuttanE! sappaaNi. the rope around the waist (arainjAN) has kiNkiNi (emerald stone laid golden studs- making musical sounds; the red coral mouth glitters by showing the milky white teeth within, He came in as Vaamanan begging with your hands for the three measures of earth from Maha bhali. Using those hands, clap your hands, my KuutA (PiLLAY- son!) one who has tresses! There are three types of rope around the waist; one is arinjnAN; araivadam and kiNkiNi. AraijnAN can not make sound. arai vadam- It has bells around but not made of pure gold. whereas the kiNkiNi makes lots of musical sound with golden bells (inside which emerald stones are placed for making sound)- not even bronze. Due to the wealthy Nandha’ status, it is gold with emerald bells. ponnarain^aaNodu maaNikkakkiN_kiNi thannaraiyaadath thanichchuttithaazhn^dhaada ennaraimEln^inRizhindhu ungaLaayar_tham mannaraimElkottaaysappaaNi maayavanE! kottaaysappaaNi. Oh maayavanE! Mysterious Lord! With your golden kiNkiNi with those emerald stones making musical sound – with your foreheaded chutti (jewel) hanging so beautifully and oscillating- get down from my lap and go to your father, king of cowherd group, Nandhan’s lap and from there clap your hands, darling! Here YasOdhA says: ungaL tham Ayarthum mannar- the king of your (pluralistic) Ayar kulam- Why plural for KaNNan? Perhaps, KaNNan took so many forms and sit on everyone’s lap. So ungaL. Or it is in the words of AzhwAr and not YasOdhA- hence, the Ayar kulam is addressed. Ayar kulam- like KaNNan. panmaNimuththu inpavaLampathiththanna enmaNivaNNan! ilangupoRREttinmEl ninmaNivaaymuththilanga ninnammaithan ammaNimElkottaaysappaaNi aazhiyangaiyanE! sappaaNi. oh KaNNA! MaNivaNNA! One, who is the personification of many rare gem stones like diamonds, sapphire, emerald and pearls; my little of bundle of joy! With your divine glittering face glowing on your mother’s ear stud (meaning: you stand close to my face and the divine face will reflect on my ear stud), stand on your mother’s lap and clap your hands! When His face is so close to her face, his while milk tooth will touch her cheek and hence, the white pearl makes her ear stud glitter more. He Himself becomes an object of all gem stones in one. In last Pasuram, YasOdhA asks Him to sit in Nandhan’s lap and clap His Hands. Here Nandhan’s call for letting Him sit close to His mother so that he can see the darling KaNNan’s face in her ear stud. Thus, he asks KaNNan to clap hands. thoon^ilaamuRRaththE pOndhuviLaiyaada vaanilaa_ambulee! chandhiraa! vaavenRu neen^ilaan^inpukazhaan^inRa aayar_tham kOn^ilaavakkottaaysappaaNi kudandhaikkidandhaanE! sappaaNi. 4. Oh moon! On chandrA! In order to come out and play in the pure outside climate in the balcony, Nandhan calls you and asks you to come near to KaNNan. He has left all his work and is with you, KaNNA! Let himstay with you for ever. Keep clapping your hands and he will feel happier to be with you only. The moon- when looked at makes one feel happy. This lad, little darling makes one feel more happy. He is more beautiful than the moon. puttiyilsERum puzhuthiyumkoNduvandhu attiyamukki akampukkaRiyaamE sattiththayirum thadaavinilveNNeyum_uN pattikkanRE! kottaaysappaaNi paRpan^aabaa! kottaaysappaaNi. Kutti KaNNan collects the wet mud and the sand to mix them and play with them; in between rushes into the kitchen to eat the entire lot of curd and butter, which is stored therein, without others knowing it. Oh little robber like the male calf! Clap your hands! The one who has lotus in the navel! Clap your hands! When the Lord has eaten the butter and curd to His stomach-full, the navel appears to sprout out and hence, AzhwAr calls Him Padma nAbhA! With the only intention of ruling the kingdom, the kings (DhuryOdhana and others) not heeding to the advice of their father Dhrutharaashtra, made friendship with others (like Karna); ordered for the battle (of KuruskhEthra); Oh Partha sarathy! You too entered the battle as the chariot driver and ensured that the hundreds perish and five succeed; With the Hands that held the stick and strings, clap your hands! Oh lion of DevakI! Due to Sakara’s sons’ digging, the vast ocean formed; When you asked the Ocean to give way for you (in Rama avtaar) it splashed its waves on You and did not come out (Samudra Raja did not come out and became SaraNAgatha dhrOhI) You took the arrow angrily to aim towards the Ocean and clap with that hand which touched the arrow! One who has the Bow in Your Hand! The Ocean is vast- says AzhwAr; He meant its arrogance too- not taking an opportunity to be of service to the Lord. The waves could only splash the waters to His Hands; but could do nothing else. He just merely touched the arrow. The Samudra raajan appeared begging for pardon. kurakkinaththaalE kuraikadalthannai nerukki_aNaikatti neeLn^eerilangai arakkar_aviya adukaNaiyaalE nerukkiyakaikaLaalsappaaNi nEmiyangaiyanE! sappaaNi. Oh Lord! The one who has the divine ChakrA in your hand! Taming the wavy noisy ocean, you built a bridge across the vast deep ocean with the help of monkey army and filled the lankA surrounded by sea with your arrows in Your hands! Clap with those hands! [Excellent PAsuram!] HiraNya kasipu had built the pillar under his own supervision a huge, beautiful pillar in his palace hall. When he himself knocked the pillar that was measured so many times earlier by him, with pride, then and there came out and grew so huge the ferocious Lion faced Lord Nrusimhan, with thunderous sound and glowing fiery eyes and thEjas; He tore open the chest of HiraNyakasipu with his sharp nails in his Hands and clap with those Hands! Oh Lord who sucked the breast of demon Poothanai! Clap! Sicne he himself masured and built it, how there could be Sriman Narayanan there inside!- he would have thought. Poor guy! When Nrusingan came out, He thought there could be some transformation in his (HiraNyakasipu’s) heart and hence He touched the heart to see. Still, it was with terrible cruel anger and hatred glowing inside. Hence He tore open the chest. He tore open the chest keeping the enemy on His lap. He sucked the breast holding the same with His nails and killed her lying on her lap. –compares Sri UttamUr Swamy quoting poorvar’s vyAkhyAnams. adaindhittu_amarar_kaL aazhkadalthannai midaindhittu mandharammaththaakan^aatti vadamsuRRivaasuki van_kayiRaaka kadaindhittakaikaLaalsappaaNi kaarmukilvaNNanE! sappaaNi. Now the blessed Devas- earlier in order to attain the same, along with the enemy asurAs went to Milky Ocean (paaRkadal) to churn the sanme with the huge tall manthara mountain using the snake Vaasuki as the rope to churn. When they felt tired, You appeared to churn the same all by yourself and also supported the mountain as Koormaavataar below. With those hands that churned, clap! Oh Lord of dark cloud colour! Clap! AzhwAr addresses as dark cloud coloured referring to the Lord’s compassion, mercy and His Parama dhayALu guNA. Supporting, churning etc.. Also the lighting within the clouds is Periya PiraaTTi MahAlakshmi who came out of that Milky ocean. - Sriya: Pathi Sriman Narayanan. aatkoLLaththOnRiya aayar_thangOvinai naatkamazhpoompozhil villipuththoorppattan vEtkaiyaalsonna sappaaNi_eeraindhum vEtkaiyinaalsolluvaar vinaipOmE.
