thirup pAvai - part 28 - "mEgamum thirumEniyum" Sri ANDAL thiruvadikaLE saraNam Dear bAgawathAs, It is very popular in tamil poetry to compare clouds to many of our subjects. One can in fact sit outside their house and imagine the cloud to be of any shape or form that they have in their mind and such will appear to them as if they are seeing a shape or form. ie., "mEham" or clouds in tamil also means that "karppannikku ettiya oru uruvam" or a shape or form that is conceivable to our imagination. While water has the capacity to fill in any shape or form, clouds can appear in any shape or form to suit one's own imagination. In tamil poetry the word clouds is used in almost every "love" theme. The clouds are sometimes sent as a "thoothuvar" or messenger for love (mEga sandEsam). In fact there was a tamil poet by name "kaLa mEgap pulavar". The silvery white clouds are normally referred to female lover. "venmEgam" is always referred to a female lover ie., "malligai mAlaigaLai soodik koLLum veLLi mEgankaL", ie., those silvery clouds who wear the garlands of jasmine flower. Men are always referred to as kArmEgam. Sometimes clouds are called as "muhil or muhil inangAL". Often the face of a female lover is also referered to "muhil". In thirup pAvai, each and evrey word has several inner meanings. Many are born out of "swabanubavams". Sometimes, some combination of few words arranged in some order gives us a inner meaning in thirup pAvai. In a next level, some pasurams arranged in some form gives more inner meanings in thirup pAvai that are not derived from external meanings. As similar to "AchArya thatthuvam" and "mantra upadEsam", this line provides an inner meaning on "arcchA rupam" of Sri Ranganathar while referring to Lord Sri KrishnA's thirumEni. kArmEni kathir mayam pOl mugatthAn refers to the "ArchA rupam" of Lord Sri RanganAtha with whom Sri ANDAL's wedlock is finally realised. The black in color thirumEni of Sri RanganAtha's ArcchA rupam has a radiance that always comes out of HIS face. "Amalan Adi pirAn" prabhandam and Sri bagawadh dyAna sOpnAm of Swami Desikan expresses in great detail about the beauty of the "ArcchA rupam" of Lord Sri RanganAtahar. It is felt 9swanubavam) that this "kArmEni" is referred to Sri Ranganataha and "kathir mayam pOl mugatthAn" is referred to Sri namperumAL.
