Dear BhAgavatOttamas, On this subject it is a pleasure to read the "vyAkhyAna pankthis" of Sri PeriyavAchhAn PiLLAi.The general purport is that, like battling fish in water, her eyes, which match each other only, are never still.Their movement is either due to joy in union or anxiety during separation;in fact they are undergoing everything which their objective, the Lord, usually undergoes. The SrIsUktis are - (first from NAchhiyAr Tirumozhi- 5.5) "ikkaNNukku ilakkAnavan paDumattai ttAn paDA-ninRALAyttu. PorA-ninRuLLa kayal pOlEyAy onRukkonRu oppAna kaNgaLAnavai uRangA" (Again in Tiru NeDundAnDakam 17) "Avanai pporugiRa [enticing] kaN ennudal; tannilE porugiRa [battling] kaN ennudal.Kayal pOlE miLirA-ninRuLLa kaN.EppOdumokka alamAppE-yAyiRRu ivaL kaNNukkuLLadu.SamSlEsha-daSaiyil harshattAle alamAkkum; viSlEsha- daSaiyil SOkattAlE alamAkkum." Here is one more feedback on godai's poru kayal kaN from SrI MG Srinivasan (formerly from Chicago, now in Srirangam). adiyEn, Kalyani Krishnamachari ========= During a TiruppAvai upanyasam here in Srirangam temple a few days ago, the Swami who gave it happened to explain 'poru kayal kaN iNai', the phrase you have discussed in the Bhakti digest of today. Literally, poru = to do battle with. It is the tradition for Indian poets to say women's eyes look like fishes. Here 'poru kayal kaN iNai' means 'pair of eyes that compete with fish'. This is just the straight meaning. For svApadesa arthAs, we need to know the vyAkhyAnams. MG Srinivasan ----------------------
