DEar sri sadagopan Iyengar,

It is true that sri sathrugnAn has not been celebrated as he ought to have
been.
swAmi nam AzhwAr has in no uncertain terms has appreciated this aspect.
"emmA,vozhivil, nedu, vEi" is the list of thiru voi mozhi-s explaining para
swarUpam or the nature of the goal to be reached - AchArya hridhyam 211.
Of this, nedu is the" nedumARkadimai seivEan pOl" thiru voi mozhi 8-10 which
extends the kainkaryam to emperumAn to the extent of kainkaryam to devotees.
Three type of devotees are illustrated in this regard. 1. Those who are
doing kainkaryam to emperumAn by being with Him always. 2. Those who do
kainkaryam though not in His presence but as they have been defeated by His
valour and beauty (bhAgwadhAs) 3. Those who do kainkaryam to bhAgwadhAs.

These three categories are listed as a. nEkam illA adiyAr -those who do not
separate themselves from the Lord ( Like sri ilaya perumAL). b sayamE adimai
thalai ninRAR- Those who do service to the Lord by being defeated by His
valour and beauty( like sri bharathA) c. kOdhil adiyAr- Those who do service
to
the devotees of the Lord.
( like sri sathrughnA)

The pAsuram runs as follows: "....kumaran kOla ainkaNai vEl thAdhai,kOdhil
adiyAr tham, thamargaL , thamargaL, thamrgaLAm, sadhirE vaikka thamiyERkE"
8-10-9

Here, kOdhil adiyAr are referred to as those devotees who do kainkaryam
without any expectations.-"ananya prayOjanamAna srEvaishNavargaLudaiya
adimayil mudhindha nilam Aga vENum engiRAR"

Here, the Edu is categorical. Since, AzhwAr does not have a contemporary
parallel for this, he has to dig into the past for an ideal role model for
this type
of adimai namely' kOdhil adimai', is the essence of this pAsurm.
That aptly summarises the greatness of sri sathrugNa in a nutshell.
vAnamAmalai padmanAbhan
