Dear Sri Sridhar vasudevan

Sri Koorathazhvan was a contemprory of Sri Ramanuja. In general, many 
acharyas were given the title of azhwan for thier contributions to 
the prosperity of our sampradhayam. Sri koorathazhwan, particularly, 
is very dear to all vaishnavas for the sacrifice he made in saving 
Sri Ramanuja.
