The above statement is one of the major differences between 
Vadakalai's and Tenkalai's. The above observation is consistent with 
the former's interpretation. However, the Tenlkalai's consider only 
Sriman Narayana to have the power to grant moksha. The status of Sri 
is purely that of a Mediatrix. She occupies a position between the 
Lord and the Acharya.

There are works by Sri Periyavaccan Pillai, that goes into details of 
the nature of Sri and the relationship between the Acharya, Sri and 
the Lord. 

In a very simple terms, Thenkalai's view is that of 
Fatherhood/Motherhood/Sonhood - where father is Lord Narayana, Mother 
is Mahalskshmi (Sri) and Soul is equated to Son. In this scheme, only 
the Father has the power to grant moksham.
