From the Bhakti List Archives

Without permission of VidyaShankar, I am sending this to bhakti list, just because it is my pleasure that God and our acharyas blessed us this opportunity to get Dr. Anantharangachar on telephone to directly teach us the ancient wisdom of vedas, as pointed very well by Vidyashankar;. Our Vedic Wisdom is multi faceted and not limited by sectarian perceptions. We need to learn our system from different perspectives wonderfully brought down to us by different Vedantic Teachers. every thought from every acharya is very valuable. Let noble thoughts come to us from all directions - Aa no bhadrah kratovo yantu vishvatah - rig veda. TAke for example, scientific theories of newton and shroedinger. will you ignore one and pick only the other! Please ask your friends to join our "modern high tech - teleconference satsangs". Only your participation constantly in all such forums can make them a lasting reality and a medium of constant interaction with our acharyas back home. Please remember that even in the lecture Dr. NSA confirmed that even for the intelligent one who can actually interpret the vedas and other texts, direct service, seeking and learning from an acharya is necessary. Participating in such discussions will give us a realtime interaction with our acharyas - which is impossible for the people in far away lands such as USA. I thank everyone for your participation, and bring your friends also to the this sattvik party! which will happen every other week. adiyen Krishna Kalale -----Original Message----- From: Vidyasankar Sundaresan [mailto:vsundaresan@hotmail.com] Sent: Sunday, January 14, 2001 8:19 PM To: kkalale1@san.rr.com; mani@ramanuja.org Subject: good talk My dear Krishna and Mani, I just listened to the talk by Dr. N. S. Anantarangacharya. I kept my line on mute, as my mike connection at my PC isn't very good and tends to be noisy. So I couldn't make any comments or ask questions at the end. First, let me congratulate your effort in putting this together. As you mentioned towards the end, this is an old generation of scholars, who have immersed themselves in the Vedantic tradition. There is much to be learnt from simply listening to them speak, and I am happy there is this level of interest. It is up to us in the younger generation to help carry forward the learning. Second, I was struck by the connections our Upanyasa-karta drew between the Gita verses on amAnitva etc. and the qualities that Sankaracharya lists as prerequisites for the seeker. After going through the commentaries, I have also independently come to the conclusion that Sankaracharya draws these ideas primarily from the Gita, particularly the kshetra-kshetrajna descriptions in chapter 13, and the recapitulation of the whole text in chapter 18. Suresvaracharya also repeatedly emphasizes amAnitvAdi guNas. Thirdly, the issues related to control of the mind - in a future talk, it would be very useful to pick up from this and have Dr. Anantarangacharya discuss how Yoga fits into the picture. Clearly, there is a very important place for it in all Vedanta traditions, and it would be most interesting to hear someone like him compare the approaches of Sankara and Ramanuja to this issue. All in all, it was great to see technology being pressed into the service of tradition. Keep up the good work! Best wishes, Vidyasankar _________________________________________________________________________ Get Your Private, Free E-mail from MSN Hotmail at http://www.hotmail.com. -------------------------------------------------------------- - SrImate rAmAnujAya namaH - To Post a message, send it to: bhakti-list@eGroups.com Search archives at http://ramanuja.org/sv/bhakti/archives/index.html#SEARCH Manage your subscription at http://www.egroups.com/mygroups
