thirup pAvai - part 48 - nArAyaNaNE - nOnbukkAna manthram

It was somewhat conceivable that certain Aaychiars were
revealed of the paratthuvam in lord Sri Krishna, while being in
AaypAdi itself. The word "nArAyaNaNE" has induced many to dig
into find the purpose for using this word. Such findings are
from many different angles and according each one's state of
mind and their own affiliations and devotions. ie., It is a
big question going through many in their mind as to why Sri
ANDAL used Sri nArAyaNa nAmam here suddenly and we intend
to analyse some of the vyAkyAnams and our own anubavam and
arrive at some observations. ie., We are trying to cover some
of the aspects covered by a few that are suitable to our own
anubavams. Sri ANDAL has called everyone of the Aaychiars to
come and join her for doing the nOnbu (saranAgathi). There
must be a manthram that serves as an "angam" for each nOnbu
including "pAvai" nOnbu. Some consider that Aaychiars were told
to chant the nArAyaNa nAmam itself as the manthram for the
"pAvai" nOnbu they are all observing. Hence such reference
to nArAyaNa nAmam was adopted there by ANDAL, as cited by
some vyAkyAna kartthAs.

It is stated earlier that those Aaychiars donot know
their idakkai and valakkai ie., they are very ignorant that they
donot even know which is their left hand and which is their
right hand. "Even though we agree that the paratthuvam was
revealed to certain Aaychiars, it may have been a blissful
experience at the time of Sri gOvardhana giri vaibavam, and one
may not necessarily remember Lord Sriman nArAyaNa in their
every day Aaychiar's life. ie., They cannot remember such name
every instant when they see and look at Sri Krishna's eyes.
Those eyes are seductive and have their own yielding nature
such that the Aaychiars will forget their ownself". This being
the case why would our Aaychiar (Sri ANDAL in such bhAvam)
remember just after seeing "kathir mathiyam pOl mugatthAn", the
name of paratthuvam ie., Sriman nArAyaNA. A question is raised
as to how they can choose the nArAyaNa nAmam as their manthram
when they are so ignorant.

As per a vyAkyAna karttha, the vEdAs roar these thiru
nAmam as "viswam nArAyaNam", nArAyaNam mahAjgnEyam", "nArAyaNa
param brahma.. nArAyaNas sthitha:", and EkO havai nArAyaNa
Aasseth", sakshoos chathrashta vyanja nArAyaNa..", and "mAtha
pithA nArAyaNa" divyO dEva EkO nArAyaNa".. The supposition
is such that since vedas were prior to Sri KrishnA in AaypAdi
and that chanting of veda manthram is prevalent in AaypAdi as
well, the Aaychiars must have been told of the nArAyaNa nAmam.

He also adds that since certain vaidikAs used to chant
as "namO nArAyaNAyEthi manthrA", and "nArAyaNa saptha mAtthiram"
in their prayers, Aaychiars must have observed the same from
that as well. However, the reference to certain AzhwArs
inspiring them couldnot have been possible as they were neither
contemporarian nor predated. Moreso, even if available,
Aaychiars couldnot have understood the esoterics of AzhwAr
pAsurams in tamil when they are referred as some who are so
ignorant. (idakkai valakkai aRiyAthavar). It is referred above
that as per certain vyAkyAna kartthAs Aaychiars may have chosen
this thiru nAmam as their manthram for the "pAvai" nOnbu.
However one of the main understanding here is that after mantra
uapdEsam from AchAryA, the jivAtmA is reminded of the thiru
AshtAkshara mantram as one of the main manthram for a prapannA.
ie., Those who have observed the nOnbu (saranAgathi) may dwell
in thiru AshtAksharam as presecribed in shAstras. Such is
conceived by alluding to the nArAyaNa nAmam here. ie., Since
the thiru ashtAkshram is based on the nArAyaNa saptham, the
citing of this thiru nAmam itself is understood as a reference
to thiru ashtAkshram.
