SrI: SrImathE Ramanujaya namah: Dearest Srivaishnavas, The last four pAsurams of PeriyAzhwAr Thirumozhi 3.9: Let us conclude the same in this post. thaarkku_iLandhampikku araseendhu thaNdakam nooRRavaL solkoNdupOki nudangidaich choorppaNakaavaichcheviyodumookku avaL aarkka_arindhaanaippaadippaRa ayOddhikkarasanaippaadippaRa. 8. The one who spoke unfalteringly (Kaikeyi)- listening to her words and accepting the two boons asked by her, Rama gave away the garland of kingdom to the younger brother and proceeded to the dense forest (aaraNyam); Sing dancing in praise of the one who cut the nose and ears of the raakshasi SoorpaNaka making her yell and cry (there in that forest); Sing dancing in praise of the king of ayOdhyA! The garland is passed to the younger brother. He is in no way inferior to Rama as a king or his capacity to rule, however. Like last pAsuram, if it is only Paadhuka raajyam, then one boon never gets fulfilled; and hence AzhwAr brings this Bharatha raajya paripalanam. Though paadhuka was in the throne, Bharatha did the acts and performed as a king- is AzhwAr’s message. Unfaltering way- she said (nooRRavaL)- She did not say just some thing or just like that casually. She said it crystal clear. Two points well made and there was no ambiguity. Whatever be the objection by Dasaratha, she made that as crystal clear and ensured that it happened. The One who cut soorpaNaka was Lakshmana actually. Why AzhwAr refers Rama here? Not just this cutting; immediately after her yelling and cries at Ravana’s front, there were 14000 Raakshasas who were killed by Rama effortlessly and single handedly (without Lakshaman’s assistance /support). Also, Lakshmana never does anything without being instcrucetd by Rama; hence Rama in principle cut the nose and ear. In this Pasurams two ladies are talked about. Both did not do good to Rama; But One was respected by Rama and other’s nose was cut. ayOOdhikkasarasan- nagarasThO vanasThO vaa thvE nO rAjA janEswara:- said the sages. maayachchakadamudhaiththu maruthiRuththu aayar_kaLOdupOy aan^iraikaaththu aNi vEyin_kuzhaloodhi viththakanaayn^inRa aayar_kaLERRinaippaadippaRa aan^iraimEyththaanaippaadippaRa. 9. Sing dancing in praise of Gopa rAjA- the most wonderful and the most mysterious Lord, KaNNan, who played flute divinely rearing cattle by going to the forest along with cowherd folks, breaking the two trees (of marudha); kicking the wheel (Sakatasura) crushing the same to pieces- which rolled towards Him rapidly to kill Him. kaaraar_kadalaiyadaiththittu ilangaipukku Oraadhaanponmudi onbathOdonRaiyum nEraa_avan_thampikkE neeLaraseendha aaraavamudhanaippaadippaRa ayOththiyarvEndhanaippaadippaRa. 10. [Now AzhwAr mentions the yuddha kaaNdam. Though he does not mention about Kishkintha, Sundara kaaNdam here, the Sethubandhana, lankA entry and the destruction of Ravana are mentioned here, which succeed those kaaNdas naturally and hence are construed to be covered by AzhwAr. Also, unable to bear the separation of SitA, AzhwAr wanted Rama to join her quickly perhaps can also be interpreted as after Soorpanaka incident, straight away Ravana vadham is mentioned herein. ] Filling the deep, vast ocean with mountains and huge stones, building a bridge, crossed the ocean to reach lankA; entering there, (He) cut one by one the nine heads and finally the tenth head of Ravana and did coronate the younger brother VisbheeshaNan to let him rule there for longer time (for ages) and granted the kingdom of asura to him- Sing dancing in praise of that most merciful and most blissful Greatest Lord Rama, who is a never satiable nectar to us for ever and ever (ArAamudhan)! Sing dancing in praise of the king of Ayodhya residents! Here the ten heads are not cut together. It is cut one by one and one after the other. When he went to abduct SitA, he went with one head in the guise of Sanyaasi. That head (which abducted) and all the other nine heads that were also hidden- all were cut. OR perhaps, Rama waited to at least let one head fall at His feet and till the end, it did not. Hence he decided to finish the last head as well. OR he cut one by one.. but he never appeared to die. And finally he sent the brahmAsthram and finished the tenth one which made all other nine fall as well thereby. He did not capture the kingdom. He did not aspire for the asurA sAmrAjyam. He granted that back to the lineage of asurA only- to the younger brother of Ravana- VibheeshaNan- who is also His devotee. He (Rama) let him rule for ages happily afterwards though he did not surrender to Rama’s feet for the same. (ninnaiyE thaan vENdi neeL selvam vENdaathaan thannaiyE thaan vENdi..) It is very rare to get such great mahAthmA in asura kula and hence he was given long life to rule there. Such greatest Lord- the insatiable nectar- ArAamudhan – who is an insatiable nectar to SitA, Sages, Monkeys, AsurAs, Visheeshanan, Sugreevan, Hanuman and others (including us). He is Parama bHogyam for them and us as well. They followed him till ayoddhi unable to bear leaving His darshan. Brahma and others declared in front of everyone “ You are Saakshaath Narayanan”. He is Ayodhya vaasis’s king. Thus, the PatthAbhishEkam is also addressed by AhzwAr. mangaLam kOsalEndrAya mahaneeya guNAthmanE| Chakravartthi thanUjAya saarvabhoumAya mangaLam|| nandhanmadhalaiyaik kaakuththanain^avinRu undhipaRandha oLiyizhaiyaar_kaLsol sendhamizhththenpudhuvai vittuchiththan_sol aindhinOdaindhumvallaarkku allalillaiyE. 11. Some girls sang and danced in praise of Nandha kumAran and others in praise of Kaakusthan (Rama) and those meaningful words were sung in ten verses by Sri VilliputthUr’s Vishu chitthan in sweet chaste Tamil and those who learn them will have NO SORROWS absolutely. Thus, he completes the pAsuram with Rama (Kaakustha) whom he takes on from the next ten fully.
