I may have been incorrect in saying that the jiva takes 13 days to attain Vaikuntha after death. A friend informs me that the jiva's ascent to Brahma-sayujya via the path of light may be immediate, or beyond our notions of time. The belief is that the funeral rituals are still performed because there is a pitr-devata who will be around (not the dead body's jiva but a different being) to accept offerings made by the survivors and hence it is obligatory for them to do so. I will see if I can confirm this and get you the full story.
