SrI: Dear BhakthAs: Today we will study the Fourth Paasuram of Thirumangai Mannan on Lord DhaivanAyakan of ThiruvahIndhrapuram ( Periya Thirumozhi: 3.1.4): mARu koNDu udanRu yethirntha val avuNan tann maarvu aham iru piLavA kooRu koNDu avan kula mahaRkku aruL kodutthavan idam , midainthu sARu koNDa menkarumpu iLam tazhai tadai visumbu uRa maNi nizhal sERu koNDa taNN pazhanamathu yezhil thihazh ThiruvayeendrapuramE First Line of the Paasuram *************************** NarasimhAvathAram, the destruction of HiraNyan , Anugraham to His Bhakthan as PrahlAdha Varadhan are covered by Kaliyan in the first and second lines of this Paasuram in addition to the celebration of the natural beauty of this dhivya desam in the last two lines. After performing MangaLAsAsanam to the Lord of Thiruayindhai as "Dhaiva Naayakan" or the Supreme Lord of the DevAs in the previous paasuram , Kaliyan acknowledges that the Lord is not limited to being just the Master (Naayakan) of the DevAs but He is also the Lord of all BhagavathAs (their Swamy and Rakshakan). Now , let us focus on the individual words chosen by Kaliyan: "MaaRu Kondu" : HiraNyan had long standing enimity to the Lord starting from the day , when his brother HiraNyAkshan was killed by the Lord during VarAhAvathAram. HiraNyan's Son , PrahlAdhan's utter devotion to the Lord added more fuel to the fire of hatred that HiraNyan had. This long lasting hatred of HiraNyan towards the Lord is referred to by Kaliyan with the words " MaaRu koNDU ". "UdanRu":To show that a trusting BhaagavathA's words can not but be true , The Lord appeared in the form of the Adhbhutha Kesari and jumped out of the pillar in the sabhaa of the offending HiraNyan .With the choice of the word , " UdanRU" , Kaliyan paints the picture of the ferocious Lord at the moment of His avathAram . "Yethirntha vall avuNan tann Maarbhagam": Once the stupefied HiraNyan recognized that his nemesis was standing in front of him in a terrorizing form and was ready to chase him down for a battle , HiraNyan remembered the power of the boons that he had recieved from Brahma and moved with determination towards the Lord to fight Him. Our Lord was faster and got hold of the Asuran effortlessly , placed him on His lap and checked to see whether by chance the Asuran had even an iota of devotion in his heart for Him. "Maarvu akam iru piLavA ": When the Lord found that there was not a trace of Bhakthi for Him in that wretched heart of HiraNyan , He tore that chest containing the heart of HiraNyan in to two parts and killed HiraNyan right away. Second line of the Paasuram **************************** " (Maarvu akam iru piLavA) KooRu koNdu avan kula mahaRkku aruL kodutthavan idam": As Ugra-JwAlA Narasimhan , the Lord was radiant with the flames of anger and tore apart the asuran. Next His mercy laden eyes fell on Bhaktha PrahlAdhan standing as the witness to the adhbhutham performed by Him . The Lord showered His limitless grace on this child Bhaagavathan and gave the promise to PrahlAdhan that He will not kill any one in his kulam in the future. This way , MahA Bali , one of the descendants of PrahlAdhan (Kula Mahan) was spared his life during the ThrivikramAvathAram . Kaliyan remebers that Thiruvayeendhrapuram is the dhivya dEsam associated with the incidents of NrusimhAvathAram . Third Line of the Paasuram *************************** In this line of the Paasuram , Kaliyan sees the abundant growth of Sugar Cane crops all around this dhivya dEsam. These stalks of Sugar cane have grown tall and are hitting the sky and are bent downwards. The tender , sugar canes are full of sweet juice ( sARu koNDa Mel Karumbhu). This assembly of youthful sugar cane is sky high , hit that ceiling and are bent downwards ( mel karumbhu iLam kazhai tadai visumpu uRa ). The canopy of these interlocked sugar cane leaves prevent the Sun's rays from entering the earth and cause extensive regions of shade (tadai visumpu uRa maNi nizhal). Fourth Line of the Paasuram **************************** " sERu konDa taNN pazhanam athu yezhil thihazh ThiruvayeendhrapuramE": Since the shade (nizhal) caused by the towering leaves of Cane sugar plants free the earth from the Sun's rays, the fields (pazhanam) are moist with abundant water (sERu KoNdavai). Kaliyan says here that ThiruvahIndhrapuram is characterized by such wet Sugar Cane crop producing fields full of fertility .
