Dear Smt. Raji, Vanakkam. In the Valmiki Ramayanam (Bala Kanda, Canto LXX) sage Vasistha (at the time of Rama's wedding) recounts the genesis of Raghu vamsa. There we find the name Kakustha appearing. "Sagara's son was Asamanja and from Asamanja, again, sprang up Amusuman. Dilipa was the son of Amsuman. Dilipa's son was Bhagiratha. From Bhagiratha sprang up Kakutstha and from Kakutstha likewise sprang up Raghu...." (Sloka 38, 39). However the names are not explained here. We find an exhaustive list of names of the ancestors of Sri Rama. In the 'Kula murai kiLaththup padalam', Bala Kandam, Kamba Ramayana, Kamban gives the following explanation for the name Kakutstha. thaan thankku velaRkku ariya thaanavarai thalai thumiththu en vaan tharak kitri kol endru kurai irappa varam koduththu aangu Endru eduththa silayinan aai igal purindha ivar kulaththu Or thOndralai paNdu indhiran kaaN vidai Eraai chumandhanum Indra asked Puranjaya (a forefather of Rama) for his help in fighting and vanquishing the asuras. Puranjaya immediately took his bow and assisted Indra. At that time Indra assumed the form of a bull and Puranjaya sat on the hump of the bull while fighting the asuras. The hump of the bull is known as 'kakuth'. Therefore, Puranjaya and his descendants came to be known as Kakutstha. As you rightly said, Pandavas belonged to the Chandra vamsam.
