Sri:

SrimatE Gopaladesika MahadesikAya Namaha,

Dear Bhaktas,

As Adiyen is typing this message, only two more weeks remain before
the Tirunakshatram of U.Ve. Sri Madhurantakam Veeraraghavachariar
Swami dawns upon us. A grand five-day (Feb 29-March 4, 2000) celebration has
been planned for this occassion. The agenda features
Veda Parayanam, Prabandha Parayanam, discourses by learned scholars,
Tadiaradhanai, and publication of a souvenir containing selected
articles by Sri Madhurantakam Swamin as well as other scholars and Acharyas.

Madhurantakam Swami shared close ties with several stalwarts and
scholars of his time, most notably U.Ve. Sri Uttamoor Swami, and
the 42-44th Jeeyars of Ahobila Matham. Sri Uttamoor Veeraraghavachariar
Swamin had great regard for Sri Madhurantakam
Swami and affectionately addressed him as "BrAtha" in one of his
articles. H.H. Injimedu Azhagiyasingar, who was about twenty years older
than Sri Madhurantakam Swami used to perform Prati-Vandanam to
Sri Swami everytime they met. Devanarvilakam Jeeyar Swami had the
utmost regard for Sri Swami's erudition and commentaries. Mukkur
Azhagiyasingar, the 44th Jeeyar of Sri Matham attended every Tirnakshatram
celebration of Sri Swami. In the case of the latter
two Jeeyars too, when Sri Swami would prostrate before them, they
would return honors with Prati-Vandanam.

Sri Tirukudandai Desikan Swami, the founding father of the Munitraya
Sampradayam composed the Taniyan "PrapadyE niravadyanAm...." for
Sri Adivan Satakopa Yathindra Mahadesikan and recognized him as one
of the Acharyas in the Munitraya Sampradayam. Sri Madhurantakam Swami
was greatly responsible for popularizing this Taniyan. In 1949,
Sri Madhurantakam Swami wrote a beautiful article in the Nrusimhapriya
discussing the commonalities of three beacon lights, who incarnated
in Purattasi Masam-i.e., Swami Desikan, Sri Adivan Satakopa Yathindra
Mahadesikan, and Sri Tirukudandai Desikan. This article was reprinted
in last year's Purattasi Masam issue of Sri Nrusimhapriya. Interested
readers can get a glimpse of the greatness of Sri Madhurantakam
Swami by perusing this article.

Sri Madhurantakam Swami was an ulitmate Viraktha in that he was
totally unostentatious and dedicated his life to the cause of
Sri Sampradayam with no expectations whatsoever. Sri Swamin was
known for his legendary Anushtanam. He was very firm in his
administering of Pancha Samskaram and Bharanyasam and always insisted that
Shishyas and prospective Shishyas uphold the requirements and pre-requisites
for SamashryaNam and Prapatti.

As part of the 100th Tirunakshatram celebrations, Lord Ranganatha
at Srirangam and Lord Rama at Madhurantakam (Sri Swami's native place)
will be adorned with silk Vastrams. Adiyen requests Bhaktas to come
forward and monetarily support this most noble Kaimkaryam.
