Tomorrow, December 8, 1997 (Karthikai Uththirattathi) is the 72nd
Thirunakshathram of Srimad Azhgiya Singar, the 45th Jeeyar Sri Ahobila
Mutt. By the time you read this, the celebration of the event must either
be in full swing or would be complete in Bombay. In a short time of about
6 years since HH's ascension to the throne of Sri Ahobila Mutt, this
Jeeyar has brought about a new sense of spiritual excitement among all Sri
Vaishnavas. HH has now traveled the length and breadth of India twice. HH
has hardly stayed in one place for more than 2 weeks, except during
Chathurmasyam and Marghazhi. Jeeyar's visits generate a lot of excitement
even in big cities such as Bombay, Delhi, and Madras. But visits to small
towns such as Vaduvoor, and Kavariman are events to remember and cherish
for years. This Jeeyar has given such exciting memories for many in
hundreds of small towns and villages.

HH's achievements are many to be listed here. The most significant, IMHO,
is the restoration of a level of financial stability to the Sri Mutt and at
the same time increase the salary for the Kainkaryaparars from the level of
abject poverty to subsistence level. With the success of the present fund
raising efforts this is sure to improve to normal living wages.

Obviously, I am utterly unworthy to comment on HH's erudition. But, I
would like to point out that learned Sri Vaishnava scholars have uniformly
heaped high praise for HH's scholarship. The Sapthathi malar is a store
house of esoteric articles on subject matters that we grapple with here
routinely. The contributors of this "malar" are unanimous in bowing down
to the erudition of HH. From my narrow perspective all I can say is that
HH is unique in explaining complex topics in a manner that is
understandable to even the likes of adiyEn. Recently, Sri Krishna Kalale
commented about how difficult and "dry" the third chapter of Srimad RTS is
for many. Not so, if you read HH's Tamil commentary on RTS. HH's
explanations make this most difficult and important chapter of RTS, engaging.

Now allow me to present a brief biography of this great soul.

Born on December 12, 1926 at Villivalam in North Arcot district, Sri
Krishnamacharyar was a student of the Madras University, passing Nyaya
Siromani in 1949 and received the first prize for general proficiency.
HH's elder brother Vedanta Vaavadhooka Narayanachariar Swamy gave HH the
requisite basic foundation, after which Sri Krishnamacharya learnt Nyaya
and Meemamsa Sastras at the feet of 42nd and 43rd Azhagiyasingars. HH had
served as Tamil Pandit in the Ramakrishna Vidyalaya, Chingleput for four
years from 1956 and subsequently as "Nyaya" Professor in the Sri Ahobila
Mutt Sanskrit College, Madhurantakam till 1965. HH was appointed "Asthana
Vidwan" of the Mutt by the 44th Jeeyar in 1966 and HH had been Joint Editor
of Sri Nrisimha Priya (Tamil) since 1982.

The 44th Jeeyar suddenly took ill in October 1991 and without hesitation HH
called upon Sri Krishnamacharya to take up the reins of the Mutt. The
anointing ceremony took place on October 21, 1991 amidst traditional
rituals, that prepared Sri Krishnamacharya for renunciation and then
ascension as the 45th Peetadhipathi of Ahobila Mutt, when HH took the
asrama name, "Srivan Satakopa Sri Narayana Yatheendra Mahadesikan".

Since the HH's ascension to the throne of Sri Ahobila Mutt Srimadhazhagiya
Singar has imbued a new sense of spiritual excitement among all
Vaishnavas. By constantly traveling the length and breadth of India and
performing Dolai at the homes of bhakthas from the President of India the
common householders, HH has inspired His devotees to new heights in
devotion to our Lord Sri Lakshminrusimha. Let us pray to our Lord to grant
us the leadership of HH for many many years.
