DAY TEN - NACCIYAR THIRUMOZHI - 10

FOURTH THIRUMOZHI

A proper appreciation of the Fourth Thirumozhi requires a piece of
information. When separated from the lover, the lady love tries augury to
see if union with him will become possible or not. The augury takes the form
of drawing a big circle first on sand and then drawing a chain of linked
circles within the bigger one. If the chain ends in an even number, the union
becomes possible. If the chain ends in an odd number the union will become
either impossible or be delayed. Therefore there is a tradition in Tamil
poetry of addrssing the circles and praying to end in an even number. The
ten songs of the Fourth Thirumozhi belong to that tradition.

SONG ONE

The clear-headed in their devotion
Worship with folded hands,
The Lord at Maliruncholai.
Augur well circles
For me to hold His feet
Where he is abed.

SONG TWO

Vamana who dwells graciously
In the forests of Venkata
In the city of Kannapura!
Augur well circles
For Him to hurry to me
To hold me by my hand
To take me in an embrace.

SONG THREE

He is the Lord of Lords
Apt to be worshipped in praise
By Brahma and the dwellers in heaven!
He is the great Son of Devaki
Of a beautiful forehead.
He is the great Son of the grand Vasudeva.
Augur well circles,
For Him to me in an embrace.

SONG FOUR

He jumped off the tree,
To land on the spread hood of Kalinga
To dance and annihilate him,
Even as the shepherds and the shepherdesses
Looked in awed fear.
Augur well circles
For Him to reach me.

SONG FIVE
He kicked the huge mammoth in musth
And annihilated the monster.
Augur well circles
For Him to join me in play
Coming all the way to our houses
In the city of Mathura of towered buildings.

SONG SIX

He is already ordained as mine.
He walked about bringing down huge trees.
He defeated Kamsa in his own game of treachery.
He is the Lord of the city of Mathura.
Augur well circles
For Him to come to me.

SONG SEVEN

Right for all to see, he annihilated
Sisubala the evil-doer of the old,
The marutha trees, Seven Bulls and the Crane
Kamsa who held the spear in splendour.
Augur well circles
For Him to come to me.

SONG EIGHT

He dwelss nowhere but in hearts
Enthusiastically in love with Him.
He is the Lord of the sweet-aired Mathura.
He is the shepherd tending the cattle.
Augur well circles
For him to reach me.

SONG NINE

He took the form of the midget
At the ritual ground of Mavali
To measure in one stride
The skies and the earth.
Augur well circles
For Him to reach me.

SONG TEN

He is the meaning of the Vedas.
He redeemed the mammoth Gajendhira.
He remains Beauty embodied/
He dwells in the hearts of the shepherds through and through.
Augur well circles
For Him to reach me.

SONG ELEVEN

To remain with and way from Him
To become aware of blemishes one's own
To remain in constant union with Him -
Looking forward to all of them,
Did the shepherdesses call for augury.
Kothai of beautiful hair sings of the same in songs ten.
Sing them and be free from sins.
