Sri: Srimathe Ramanujaya Nama: Dear BhAgavatas, With this post adiyEn's poor effort at translating some of the vyakhyanams of the matchless Kanninun Siruththambu pasurams is concluded. AdiyEn has two apologies to make to everyone. One, for taking this long to do the translation. I have no real excuse for that, so I won't make one. Second, for posting vyakhyanams for Azhvar's pasurams during anadhyayana kAlam. I had two reasons for the latter. One, the personal opinion (not sanctioned by any one) that it was ok to study (but not recite) Azhvars pasurams during this time; and second, this being the last pasuram (which has been fairly delayed already), I did not want to postpone it to the end of January. I ask for everyone's forgiveness for both transgressions. Also, I want to point out that this was just a simple effort by me and in addition there are vyakhyanams such as those of Periyavaccan Pillai and Azhagiya Manavala Perumal Nayanar that I did not cover. Therefore, needless to say bhAgavatas should go to the great scholars and acharyas to learn this work. Nevertheless this has been a great learning experience for me and I thank Him, the acharyas and all the bhAgavatas for allowing me to do this. adiyEn madhurakavi dAsan TCA Venkatesan -- Kanninun Siruththambu Eleventh Pasura Vyakhyana Saram Excerpted from Sri Nanjeeyar and Nampillai's Vyakhyanam A Tamil version of this vyakhyana saram is available at http://www.acharya.org/vyakyanam/kst/kst11.pdf Pasuram: anbanthannai adainthavarkatkellAm anban thenkurukoor nambikku anbanAy mathurakavi sonnasol nambuvAr pathi vaikuntham kANminE Meaning: Those who have faith in these words of Madhurakavi Azhvar, which were said by him with great devotion to Nammazhvar who has love and devotion to everyone who is a devotee of the Lord who Himself loves all who seek Him, will find their abode to be Vaikunta. Vyakhyana Saram: Madhurakavi Azhvar concludes by stating that for those who learn this prabhandam, their place of abode is that Sri Vaikunta where the word of Nammazhvar is the rule. For those who consider this prabandham as their refuge, His lotus feet is their abode. anban: Lordship is not His main quality; showing love and affection to all is ("ripUNAmapi vatsala:"). He has the quality of vAtsalya as one of His kalyANa guNas. His love reaches everyone without regard ("dEvAnAm dAnavAnAnjca sAmAnyamadhidaivatam"). adainthavarkatkellAm anban: He loves everyone whether they are attached to Him or not. All those who are attached to one such as Him are loved by Nammazhvar. Nammazhvar's grace may reach everyone but his love reaches only those who are His devotees ("paramanaip payilum thiruvudaiyAr yavarElumavar kaNdeer emmaiyALum paramar"). anbanaay: Madhurakavi Azhvar is attached only to Nammazhvar. That is his nature. then kurukoor nambikku anbanaay: Not only to Him, not only to His devotees, Madhurakavi Azhvar is attached to his acharya as well. If he wanted salvation for himself, he would be attached to Him. If he seeked that which He loves, he would be attached to His devotees. If he seeked that which He as well as His bhaktas love, he would have to be attached to an acharya. An acharya first helps remove the darkness of lack of knowledge; then he brings forth the the divine qualities of the Lord and makes one become involved in that; he also helps at the time of realizing the goal of reaching Him; and he is the one who is present at the end of that goal. mathurakavi: He calls himself madhurakavi because he himself finds the poems he wrote about Nammazhvar nectar-like. nambuvaar pathi vaikuntham kaaNminE: The abode for those who learn this pasuram is the Lord's lotus feet. If Nammazhvar is the one to seek, should not the place to attain be Azhvar Thirunagari? At Thirunagari the words of both AdipirAn and Nammazhvar will be the rule. At Sri Vaikunta, only the word of Nammazhvar will be the rule ("adiyAr nilaakinRa vaikunthamO?"). Those who love the Lord will automatically have love for His devotees; those who love all His devotees will love Nammazhvar. Therefore, Madhurakavi Azhvar states that His divine abode is the place to be. Sri Vaikuntam is the place where those who love Sriman Narayana and Sri Nammazhvar are present. Is there not a difference between His divine abode and the leela vibhUti? Madhurakavi Azhvar uses Nambi ThiruvazhuthivaLanAdu dAsa's words that after Parasara Bhattar was born the difference between the two was removed. Madhurakavi Azhvar says that even if these songs are not sweet to someone, if they consider them as their refuge it will take them to Sri Vaikuntam. Kanninun Siruththambu Vyakhyana Saram is concluded. Madhurakavi Azhvar, Nanjeeyar, Nampillai Thiruvadigale Saranam Azhvar Emperumanar Jeeyar Thiruvadigale Saranam adiyEn madhurakavi dAsan T.C.A.
