SrI: SrImathE Ramanujaya namah: Dearest Srivaishnavas, In the last ten, YasOdhA had sent KaNNapiraan to the forest for rearing calves. Now, after the whole day is over, YasOdhA has been waiting anxiously and lovingly for her darling son to come back. She comes out of the house and awaits His arrival. PeriyAzhwAr enjoys this. seelaikkudhambai_orukaadhu orukaadhusen^n^iRamElthOnRippoo kOlappaNaikkachchumkooRaiyudaiyum kuLirmuththin_kOdaalamum kaalippinnEvarukinRa kadalvaNNanvEdaththaivandhukaaNeer NYaalaththuppuththiranaippeRRaar nangaimeer! naanOmaRRaarumillai. 1. Oh ladies! KaNNan (who comes behind the cattle) - the blue ocean hued one- who has the small cloth in one ear lobe (hole) and a red coloured flower in the other decoratively; the broad waist cloth (in order not to let it fall- there is a kacchu as well), the cool, pearl necklace around His neck; - Come and see Him. There can never be anyone on this earth better than me for (being blessed to have) a son like this great. KaNNapiraan went like a normal boy; Now he is coming back with that grand decorative flowers on his ears. She does not wish to enjoy alone. She calls her folks as well. [EkasswAthu na punjeetha:] Remaining PAsurams are referred to calling Him. kannin^anmaamadhiLsoozhtharu poombozhilkaaviriththennarangam manniyaseermadhusoodhanaa! kEsavaa! paaviyEnvaazhvugandhu unnai_iLanganRumEykkach chiRukaalEyootti_oruppaduththEn enninmanamvaliyaaL_orupeN_illai en_kuttanE_muththamthaa. 2. 2.{He has come nearer now; She calls Him and hugs Him]. Oh MadhusUdhanA! Kesavaa! (swamy of Brahma and RudrA) the Lord of Most auspicious attributes! Resident of most fertile Srirangam (full of flower gardens; surrounded by great wide corridors (praakaaram) time immemorial and is at the south of Cauvery river). The sinner- I- considering only the work of cowherd group- have sent you to rear the calves. There can never be a crueler and hard hearted lady than me among all women. My darling son, Give me a kiss. [en kuttanE! muttham thaa]. KaNNan is coming from afar. It appears [to AzhwAr] as if he is coming from srirangam! He resides there always protecting the worlds. He killed Madhu and kaitapar as Lord Hayagreeva; He is the One who created Chathur mukha BrahmA and Rudran. Such greatest Lord - You- why did I have to send you to the forest to rear calves? Just because you are born a cowherd Boy. I am great sinner. (paaviyEn). I enforced my caste (jaathi) on You. Where is the Jaathi for you, Lord? Give me a kiss. Having come near, she pulls Him closer to her and asks Him kaadukaLoodupOykkanRukaLmEyththumaRiyOdi kaarkkOdalpooch choodivarikinRadhaamOdharaa! kaRRuththooLikaaN_unnudambu pEdaimayiRsaayalpinnaimaNaaLaa! neeraattamaiththuvaiththEn aadi_amudhusey_appanumuNdilan unnOdu_udanEyuNbaan. 3. 3. Going through the forest to rear the calves- you whole divine body is now smeared with the dust (raised) from the calves. Oh DamodharA- one who adorns Himself with kaar Kodal flower (big, white flower)! Go and take bath, Oh dear hubby of beautiful peacock like Nappinnai! I have prepared the [hot] water ready for you. You can eat (after your bath). [Your father is waiting hungrily for you to come. He hasn't yet eaten. So, please hurry up, KaNNA.] You divine body is dirty with dust. Take bath. Why Nappinnai is referred to - here. It may be interpreted that: If you take bath now, the only it will be Bhogyam for Nappinnai at night. kadiyaar_pozhilaNivEngadavaa! karumpOrERE! neeyukakkum kudaiyumseruppumkuzhalumtharuvikkak koLLaadhEpOnaaymaalE! kadiyavengaanidaikkanRinpinpOna siRukkuttachchengamala adiyumvedhumbi un_kaN_kaLsivandhaay_asaindhittaayn^ee_embiraan! 4. 4. Oh Lord- one who stands at ThiruvEmkatam! [full of most fragrant gardens]. Black fighting bull-like Lord! MaalE! You ran off even after I kept the umbrella, the chappals and your favorite flute ready (for you to play in the forest). Oh Parama upakaarakanE! (Most merciful/helpful Lord). Going behind the calves on those hot, hard forests with your small tender feet becoming reddish and your eyes too have become red (due to your exertion). ThiruvEmkaramudaiyaan is referred to because there is plenty of forests here for all calves. Or He went upto ThiruvEmkatam and came back. That's how your tired ThirumEni (divine body) shows. Things you like- umbrella, chappals, etc.. - All children like new stuff. He ran off hurriedly as he was more enthusiastic to rear the calves than these stuff. His eyes are also exposed to heat just like the tender lotus feet are exposed to. Hence both have become reddish. paRRaarn^adungamunpaanchasanniyaththai vaayvaiththapOrERE! ensiRRaayarsingamE! seethaimaNaaLaa! siRukkuttachchengaNmaalE! siRRaadaiyumsiRuppaththiramum_ivai kattilinmElvaiththuppOy kaRRaayarOdun^eekanRukaLmEyththuk kalandhudanvandhaaypOlum. 5. 5. Oh male bull like One, who blows the thunderous Paancha janyam (white conch shell) sending shivers among enemies (who did not hold to his lotus feet)! the lion cub of cowherd group! The Lord of SithA PiraaTTi! SarvEshwara! who came as small red lotus eyed Kannan! You had kept the small waist cloth and the little knife (sword) for your waist on the cot itself before you fled for the forest. You have come back along with your friends and calves. First line- AzhwAr refers to Naarayanan doing asura samhaaram with His pancha janyam; second line he refers Krishna as Nrusimha and Rama. [In the seventh pAsuram he refers Mathsya koorma varaaha Avtaars] When AzhwAr refers to His destroying enemies like the male bull, he is reminded of Sita PiraaTTi's hugging Lord Rama after the Kara dhUshaNa vadham. Hence Sita's Lord is addressed. anchudaraazhi_un_kaiyakaththEndhum azhakaa! neepoykaipukku nanchumizhn^aagaththinOdupiNangavum naan_uyirvaazhndhirundhEn en_seyya_ennaivayiRumaRukkinaay? [Due to Your ThirumEni sambandham (connection with Your divine Body)- it is more beautiful. ] Even when you jumped into the pond and fought with that cruel snake, (Kalingan), I was happy at home here. Why did I make me feel restless and caused butter flies in my stomach? [I was of no use to you] You have no fear at all. Oh Lord of blue hued kaayam flower like beauty! You have become an object of thinking for KaNNan always. When you were seen as blue coloured one fighting with Kaalingan, we all thought that you are bitten by the poisonous snake. Later only did we realize that your natural colour is kaayaam poo colour (blue hued one). panRiyum_aamaiyummeenamumaakiya paaRkadalvaNNaa! unmEl kanRinuruvaakimEypulaththEvandha kaLLa_asuran_thannai senRupidiththuchchiRukkaikaLaalE viLangaayeRindhaaypOlum enRum_enpiLLaikkuththeemaikaLseyvaar_kaL anganamaavaar_kaLE. 7. 7. Oh Lord, one who took Mathsya, Koorma and Varaaha avataars! Ksheera samudha vaNNA! (one whose colous is like milky white ocean)! When an asurA came in the form of Vathsa (calf) and entered into the group of calves, (to kill you), you caught hold of the same with your little hand by its tail and threw at the nearby tree (viLAm pazha). You whirled it round and round and dashed it against a kapitha tree. Whoever attempts to do bad to my darling son, will always be destroyed. The milky ocean is referred to as the colour. The Mathsya Koorma Varaaha avtaars had white colour. kEttaRiyaadhanakEtkinREn kEsavaa! kOvalar_indhiraRku kattiyasORumkaRiyumthayirum kalandhudan_uNdaaypOlum oottamudhalilEn_un_thannaikkoNdu orupOdhum_enakkaridhu vaattamilaappukazhvaasudhEvaa! unnai_anchuvan_inRuthottum. 8. 8. Of Lord of Devas and Nithya sooris. Oh Kesavaa! Having heard from others, I narrate these things: You ate all the food and others that were offered by cowherd folks to Devendran. Like that there are many. We could not offer all that. I can not last even a day taking care of such Greatest You and by feeding You what you can consume. Oh Blesmishless Paravadudeva! I am scared of You from today. It appears (they told me) that you ate all that was kept for Indran. I was standing outside my house waiting for you to come from the Puja and eat. People told me you consumed everything that was kept. Alas! I can not last even a day feeding You. What food and how can I feed you? They only said. None saw. (actually). Oh Kesavaa! Lord of everyone and Devas! It is wrong on our part to pray to others when You are there with us. That's why You consumed. Oh Blesmishless Para Devatha! Para vasudeva! Thus, He never gets tired even when there is no food. Oh Lord one who has white conch shell in His hand! Seventh day from today is ThiruvONam. I have invited good singers and gathered seeds for paalikai. (NavadhAnya paalikai). In order to celebrate in a grand manner, I am preparing various kinds of vegetables, rice in huge vessels. From tomorrow do not go behind the calves. Dress well and stay at home (as it is going to be you birthday). puRRaravalkul_asOdhain^allaaychchi thanpuththiran_gOvindhanai kaRRinammEyththuvarakkaNdukandhu avaLkaRpiththamaaRRamellaam seRRamilaadhavarvaazhtharu thenpudhuvaivittuchiththan_sol kaRRivaipaadavallaar kadalvaNNan_kazhaliNaikaaNbaar_kaLE. 10. YasOdhA - the good cowherd lady- one who has the cobra like waist (algul), called affectionately and lovingly enjoyed Her darling son Govindhan when he came back after rearing calves. These words of Yasodha were sung by Sri VilliputthUr's Bhatta nathan and those who recite them and read these ten pAsurams will be blessed to enjoy the pair of most beautiful and most purest Lotus feet of ocean coloured KaNNan.
