Dear BhakthAs :
Let us pay our respects to the Taniyans of ThiruppAvai
in this posting .
Introductory Remarks (v.S)
**************************
ThiruppAvai's glories are celebrated by the THREE Taniyans
(Mughdhakams) , which are composed by ParAsara Bhattar(b.1074 A.D)
in Sanskrit ( NeeLA Thunga Sthana Giri--) and two more in
Tamil by UyyakkoNDAr ( 826-937 A.D), the direct disciple of
AchArya Naathamuni . Swamy UyyakkoNDAr's Taniyans are:
(1) Anna Vayal Puthuvai ANDAL--
(2) SooDikkoduttha SudarkkodiyE --
There are number of other celebratory verses on
ANDAL's ThiruppAvai or Her avthAra Sthalam
by PoorvAchAryAs although the above three are
the only ones recognized as Taniyans for ThiruppAvai .
Some of the other verses in Tamil celebrating
ANDAL's Vaibhavam are:
(1) vEyar Pukazh VillipputthUr --Swamy Desikan
(2) inRo AadippUram ----Swamy MaNavALa MaamunigaL
(3) PeriyAzhwAr PeNN PiLLayAi-- "
(4) Anjukkudikku oru SanthathiyAi -- "
(5) paathakangaL Theerkkum Paramandi Kaattum
Vedam anaitthukkum VitthAhum --Vedap PirAn Bhattar
(6) Godhai PiranthavUr --Vedap PirAn Bhattar
(7) Vaazhit ThirunAmam: ThiruvAdip Pooratthil--
We will focus on the First of the three Taniyans
in this posting : Sri ParAsara Bhattar's Sanskrit
Taniyan , which is considered as the essence Of
(SaarArtham of )ThiruppAvai takes this grand form :
NeeLA-Tunga sthanagiri-taDI Suptham udhbhOdhya KrishNam
PaarArTyam svam sruthi-satha-siras-siddham adhyApayanthI
svOcchishtAyAm sraji nigalitham yaa balAthkruthya bhunkthE
GOdhA Tasyai Nama idhamidham bhUya yEvAsthu BhUya:
(Meaning according to Dr.V.N.S.Raghavan): May I offer
my obeisance again and again to Goddess ANDAL alias
GOdhA --to her alone--who awakened Lord KrishNA (taking
rest and)sleeping on the mountain-like lofty breasts of
Goddess NILA alias Nappinnai PirAtti; GOdhA , who has
imparted to Him ( Lord KrishNA )Her dependence ( on Him )
as established in the hundreds of the texts of the crown
of the VedAs( Viz. the VedAnthA or the Upanishads); and
GOdhA , who forcefully enjoys Him after binding Him with
flower-wreaths that were already worn by Her.
Last week , SrimAn U.Ve. M.A.VenaktakrishNan Swamy
gave a Tele-UpanyAsam on this Taniyan alone for
more than thrity minutes . He dealt at length with
the avathAram of this Taniyan at ThirukkOshtiUr
at the request of a sishyar of ParAsara Bhattar ,
who was at this dhivya dEsam in self-exile from Srirangam
as a result of his anguish over the apachAram of a local king.
Sri M.A.V.Swamy explained the significance of the words
" PaarArhtyam" at length in his UpanyAsam.
We will take up the SvApadEsArthams of this taniyan
as revealed by PoorvAchAryALs in general and
Sri PerukkAraNai Swamy in particular in the next posting.
"PinjAi PazhutthALai ANDALai Bhakthiyudan
NaaLUM VazhutthAi ManamE mahizhndu "
