The 100th dasakam of Sri NaarayaNIyam : SlOkams 1-5

From the Bhakti List Archives

• August 11, 1999

Dear BhakthAs :

This is the dasakam that is the crowning glory
of Sri NaarayaNIyam .It deals with the divine darsanam of
Lord Krishnan of GuruvAyUr as Sri VaikuntanAthan .

In the last dasakam , Sri Bhattadhiri performed SaraNAgathi
at the feet of the Lord with the lines : " SarvOthkrushtAm
abhIshtAm --chittham haranthIm Moorthim thE samsrayEham ".

After that Self-surrender , Sri Bhattadhiri thought about
Sri SukhAchAryAL's anugraham that empowered King Parikshith
to experience the blissful darsanam of Sri VaikuNTam
and the Lord presiding over that Sri VaikuNTam .As Sri
Bhattadhiri lifted his head to write the 1024th
slOkam , he saw right inside the Sanctum-Sanctorium
of Sri GuruvAyUrappan , the Sri VaikuNTa Darsanam with
Sri GuruvAyurappan giving the darsanam as Sri VaikuNTanAthan .
Sri Bhattshiri was overcome with joy and began to describe
the scene that he saw in front of him with the first
slOkam of this dasakam ," agrE pasyAmi thEjO--".

Sri Bhattadhiri wished to write this sthuthi of Sri GuruvAyurappan
with 1024 slOkams inview of the sacred manthram of Gayathri
having 24 aksharams . When he reached the 1023rd slOkam ( the last one
of the 99th dasakam ) , he was blessed with the Sri VaikuNTa
darsanam of Sriman NaarAyaNan and he composed the rest of
the slOkams of the 100th dasakam as a description of
the Sri VaikuNTam scenes and the splendour of the Lord there .

Slokam 100.1: Visulaization of Sri VaikuNTam

(Meaning): Oh GuruvAyurappA ! I see in your sannidhi
a bright blue thEjas(effulgence) having the hue of KaasAmpoo
(KalAya Flower) pushpa cluster .I am now immersed in that deep
nectarine experience . Next I see in the middle of that blue
effulgence , a beautiful child at the beginning of youth and
surrounded by admirers like Sage NaaradhA with joyous horripulation
and the various Upanishads in the form of lovely ladies singing
Your praise .

SlOkam 100.2:The description of the KesabhAram and the forehead
****************************************************************

Now , Sri Bhattadhiri focuses on the beautiful KoNDai
(KaLaapam )of the Lord and His lovely forehead :

(Meaning): Oh GuruvAyUrappA !I see and enjoy Your black and
dense kEsa BhAram ( trove of tresses) which has the curly waves
in front of Your forehead(Kaaka Paksham ).These tresses are held
together in a special fold and are decorated with peacock feathers
and many gem-studded AabharaNams .These tresses are also surrounded
by a garland made of MandhAra Flowers . Just below those tresses ,
I see Your beautiful , broad forehead resembling that of
Baala chandran . On that forehead , I see the bright
Urdhva PuNDram .

SlOkam 100.3: Prayer to the Lord to protect him as the helpless one

(Meaning ): Oh GuruvAyurappA ! The movement of Your eye brows
as they saunter here and there are like the movements of the waves
of an ocean of Mercy .The long and dark hairs covering those
dynamic eye brows shine in splendor. Under those eye brows are
Your lotus red , long eyes with their black pupils , which
through their playful glances filled with mercy cool the hearts
of the beings of Your world. May those auspicious glances of
Yours fall on me (the orphan ), who has no one to protect me .

Sri BhakthAs of GuruvAyUrappan state that the Lord was surprised,
when Sri Bhattadhiri described himself as an "anAThai". They
say that Lord GuruvAyUrappan uttered aloud then that Sri Bhattadhiri,
who composed more than 1,000 slOkams on Him is no anATai and that He
will stand by him and protect him always.

SlOkam 100.4 : The prayer to enjoy the Lord's auspicious Face

(Meaning ): Oh GuruvAyUrappA ! Your face shines with an aquiline
nose , emerald mirror-like cheek regions . The rathna KuNDalams
in the form of Makarams dangling from Your ears are reflected
in the mirror-like surface of Your cheeks .Your two lips shine
in their redness like the ripe BhimbhA fruit ( kOvaip Pazham)
and those lips sport a gentle smile arising out of Your happy
state of mind.May that beautiful face with such beauty marks
appear before my mind always !

SlOkam 100.5:Prayer to hear the vENu ghAnam of the Lord

(Meaning ): Oh GuruvAyUrappA ! Here Sri Bhattadhiri prays for the boon
of hearing the Lord's divine vENu ghAnam . The Lord being Bhaktha-
parAdhInan obliged and for a whole muhUrtham , the Sannidhi was
filled with the divine vENu ghAnam of the Lord .

Sri Bhattdhiri's prayer took this form : Oh GuruvAyUrappA !
Your hands have the wrists adorning gem-studded golden bangles .
Your palms of the hands are like the red shoots of a tender
bud. Your hands are shining with the Kaanthi of the nails
of the fingers holding Your divine flute generating the divine
music in different rAgAs . May the nectar-like music emanating
from Your flute flood my ear passages and sanctify them !
