Srimaan Venkatanaathaaryaha kavithaarkika kesari| Vedanthaachaaryavaryome sannidhaththaam sadhaa hrudi|| Dear Bhaagavathaas, "Daivaadheenam jagathsarvam". God is the basis of all. And Love is the basis of God. How beautiful, blissful and peaceful it is to experience this love! Our dearest Swami Desikan gives a glimpse of his experience in Daya Sathakam. With my most humble and loving namaskaarams to the achaarya and to Sriya: pathi, may I share the following summary translation with you, in postings comprising about ten slokas at a time. (This posting includes slokams 81-90) The translation is based on the commentary and explanations by Sri Srinivasa Raghavacharyar Swami, published in the Tamil book, Daya Sathakam, by the Sri Desika Dharsana Sabhai, Villivaakkam, Madras. Sri Srinivasa Raghavacharyar Swami says that the Daya Sathakam is a sastra, sthothra, poem, painting, an endless spring of water and an illumining light. My prayers to Sriman Narayana for everyone of us to follow in the footsteps of our acharyas, practice what they illustrated with their conduct and experience the Love of the Lord (rasovai saha) that they experienced. All errors are your humble servant’s. Daasan Sundararaghavan Krishnaswami Sarma --------------------------------------------------------------- Dayaa Sathakam (Slokams 81 - 90) 81. (O The Love of Lord Venkatesa!) In this Kali Yuga when there is widespread decline in Dharma, you have willed to remove all grief by the shower of Love. The outpouring of Love is more than planned. You are as beneficient as the water-laden mountain clouds. Under your total protection, the Lord Thiruvenkatamudaiyaan wears many unsullied (avataaric) forms. 82. (O The Love of Lord Venkatesa!) You have created this world of diversity. For sustaining it, you have embraced the form of Lord Thiruvenkatamudaiyaan that is unsullied and full of kalyaana gunas, and take the mathsya and koorma avataarams. 83. (O The Love of Lord Venkatesa!) The Lord Srinivasan, who is manifested on Thirumala Hills, is enjoying the yoga nidhdhira during pralaya (dissolution). At your prompting, He ‘wakes up’ to create. The earth is submerged under the swelling waters of the sea. He takes the Varaaha avataaram and brings the submerged earth above water, carrying it on His tooth. 84. O The Love of Lord Venkatesa who is manifesting on Thirumala Hills! You appear terror-striking with your thick mane, with boisterous and aggressive activities that are fearsome to behold and with the swelling anger constraining the eye-brows rendering the countenance frighteningly wrathful (as Nrisimhaa). But to prahlaada, you shower the Grace of your Lotus eyes, giving succor to him and you appear so sweet to him! 85. (O The Love of Lord Venkatesa!) Your Lotus Feet that have been sacredly washed by Brahma, that remove all sins, that have the fragrance of the Vedas and that measured the heaven and the earth. They have left behind permanent stamps with these activities. 86. (O The Love of Lord Venkatesa!) Keeping with the fundamental dharma of protecting the good of the society, you prompted the slaying of the kings who had strayed away from the moral path, by Parasurama. This was also your sport. 87. (O The Love of Lord Venkatesa!) You are beneficial to the world. You fulfill the desires of all. You prompted the avataar of Rama, as the scion of Raghu dynasty. The bridge across the ocean was built at your prompting and is a reminder that you destroy all sins. 88. O The Love of Lord Venkatesa! The Lord is your own. He is at your beck and call. His sport is benefiting the world. As Balaraama, the Lord turns a blind eye to the sins of those devoted to him, but punished the wicked with his plough. 89. (O The Lord of Venkatesa!) When the wicked outnumbered the pious and started obstructing beneficial activities for the world, dharma was in evident decline. The Bhooma Devi could no longer bear the burden of the load of sins committed by the wicked. To alleviate the concern of Bhooma Devi and to set the society back on the dharmic path, you prompted the Sriya:pathi to manifest Himself as Krishna on earth and provide the Lamp of Gita to dispel the darkness of adharma. 90. (O The Love of Lord Venkatesa!) Lord Srinivasan who has manifested on Thirumala Hills carries a sword that is like the dark water-bearing clouds. The "rains from this cloud" remove the heat of Kali Yuga and bring in the fresh crops of Krutha Yuga. The sword sways gently in the breeze generated when the Lord moves His hands. Soaked in Love, the sword is pure and glistens as the lightning. ________________ Kavithaarkika simhaaya kalyaana guna saaline| Srimathe Venkatesaya vedaantha guravennamaha||
