Dearest Srivaishnavas,

This Thirumozhi is YasOdhA's calling Kutti KaNNan for ear boring 
ceremony. 
The process involves, ear boring, then with the thread (burnt hot 
thread) 
sent through the hole in order not to make the hole disappear and 
then 
adorning the ear with studs (makara kuzhai)
A lovely set as usual.

The ear boring ceremony generally takes place after 12 months during 
the 
first year birthday. So, AzhwAr enjoys 12 pAsurams in this 
Thirumozhi. 
Another thing. PeriyAzhwAr has not used anthAthi style (one pAsuram 
ends 
with a word and then next starting with the same word.. called 
anthAthi 
style- like Thiruvaymozhi, mudhal, IraNDAm moonRaam nooRanthAThi, 
Naanmukhan 
ThiruvanthAthi, Ramanusa NooRRanthAThi, KaNNinun chiRutthAmbhu, 
PiLLai 
anthAthi, Thiruvaaymozhi nooRRanthAthi etc)

PeriyAzhwAr uses antHAThi style here for these 12 pAsurams 
(Poorvacharyars 
comment that it is to have a counter for the 12 months of Kutti 
KaNNan's 
first year. (We at home also relish every month of our infants at 
home and 
count for one year.) AzhwAr also enjoys the 12 vyUhAvathArams 
(Kesava, 
Narayana names for these 12 pAsurams. From vibhavam (KaNNan) to 
vyUham and 
then to Para vAsudEvan like muktha jIvaathmA enters as described in 
Sri 
bhashyam.

Oh Ocean coloured Lord! The mad fellow who drank the demon's breast! 
Kamsan 
is very cruel. [He will plan to kill you]. You father also has nit 
yet come 
back [delayed his coming back]. People -to take care of you- the 
servants- 
who should have been here to protect you- are not here to protect you 
[due 
to some other work of theirs]. When such is the case, you have h\gone 
out 
and loiter at various places! Oh Kesavaa! the Lord of most auspicious 
attributes! The cowherd boys, the women folk are assembled here to 
witness 
the ear boring ceremony. I have also kept the betel nut appropriately.

When the ear is bored, the heated thread is inserted into the hole 
for 
reducing the pain. Since it is heated, KaNNan feels scared. Oh 
Narayana! One 
who is there in [and is never separated from &] the hearts of His 
devotees! 
Come here walking with the musical sound of anklets in Your Lotus 
feet, 
wearing coral ornaments around the waist. Oh my Swamy! the 
incomprehensible 
One! Without any burning sensation, I will insert this thread. Look 
at these 
golden studs, which are so beautiful and colourful. How wonderful! 
These are 
for you.

Narayana! He is the Supporter, sustainer and Director. He is 
incomprehensible. He is the way as well as the goal. Praapyam and 
praapakan. 
He is the supporter. He is Sarva vyApakan. Even then, for those who 
think He 
is incomprehensible, He is understood properly; For those who think 
they 
know Him, He is never understood. avignAthAm vijAnathAm;.. He is the 
most 
merciful. Piraan. ParamOpAkaarakan. Swamy Desikan lists His upakaaram 
in 
Upakara Sangraham]. YasOdhA tempts Kutti with the beautiful golden 
ear 
studs.

Oh little darling of cowherd folks! The one who appeared in order to 
save 
all of us! The brightest baby [thEjasvI]! Maadhavaa! One who has 
Periya 
PiraaTTi is His chest! I have brought these beautiful ear ornaments 
which 
are like the golden fishes living in the ocean. These are the most 
valuable 
and quite expensive ones. With little warmth only, I will insert the 
thread. 
Whatever you want, I will give. Come here enslaving those young girls 
of 
cowherd folk with your divine charm.

Maadhavan- When PiraaTTi herself is in great love with you and 
resides in 
You, what about others? naturally they are all attracted by Your 
divine 
beauty. You are such a sowlabhyan to have taken birth in this cowherd 
group 
for them to be attracted towards you. Being such a sowlabhyan [with 
your 
Parathvam], you are shining resplendently with Sowlabhyam and 
Parathvam 
together glittering in You. You are Blemishless. akilahEya 
prathyaneekan. 
Hence you shine so brightly. Thus, we also get our darkness dispelled 
seeing 
Your thEjas. In spite of residing as antharyaami, You still do not 
get bound 
by the karma of jIva.. Whatever You want, I will give. You can eat. 
And 
still, You shine with such thEjas, with blesmishless attribute. When 
You are 
of such glittering quality, what is wrong in this small thread which 
is just 
warm to be inserted into your ear hole?

Govindhaa! Look at these young cowherd boys who wear the ear studs 
diamond 
impregnated. Listen to their words (asking you to wear these studs}. 
If you 
wear them, I will give you sweet jack fruit and this warm breasts of 
mine 
for you to eat [drink]. Oh PiraanE! I perform anjali to You. Come 
here.

The jack fruit at least has small thorns and tough skin. My breast 
are so 
beautiful, warm and will give you same [if not more] sweetness to 
you. Come 
and wear these studs, Govindha! sOttham piraan- stHothram- praise to 
You, Oh 
Piraan! I perform anjali. the anjali is sweeter than the jack fruits 
and the 
breast milk as well. Lord likes this much more than anything else.

sOttham piraan- stHothram- praise to You, Oh Piraan! I perform anjali 
to 
you. Even then You do not heed to my words. Oh One with most 
auspicious 
attributes! KalyANa guNa gaNouka maahaarNavaa (NambhI) ! If You go 
out 
playing wit those young girls, how will I think that you are most 
auspicious. Oh most helpful one! ParamOpakaarakanE! (PiraanE) If you 
co-operate for this insertion of thread, I will give you big appam 
for you to eat again. Oh SrI VishNu! the one desired after by young 
ladies 
of bamboo like shoulders! Come here.

I know where you keep going without listening to my words, yelling. 
You are 
walking away to play with those girls. Then, you won't come fast. I 
will 
give big appams to you as well as to all your friends playing with 
You. Come 
here. You are Sri VishNu; sarva vyApI. You take so many forms to play 
with 
all girls. Take another Roopam and be with me for this insertion of 
thread.

Oh NambhI! MadhusUdhana! When you showed me the mouth wide open, 
showing all 
worlds inside, I understood that You are MadhusUdhanan only. Such 
Lord- You, 
when I inserted the thread and performed this ear boring, You cried 
so loud 
for everyone to hear. Look at your ears. There is no wound at all. 
The ear 
will get just bent little when we insert the thread. Just bear with 
it for a 
fraction of a second. My KaNNAA! One who is like dark cloud of rainy 
season! 
dark bluish ocean like coloured Lord! Protector of everyone! Eat this 
breasts when we do the ear boring and thread insertion.

First he refused for the ear boring. Then when he started crying, she 
offered the breasts, and when he started eating , drinking milk, she 
again 
attempt drilling. He cries so loud hugging her tightly due to pain. 
She 
diverts Him saying His past deeds.. when you opened the mouth, I saw 
all 
worlds and realized that You are none other than MadhusUdhanan.

When she started the insertion and ear boring / adorning again, he 
says "I 
do not want even your breast milk" and throws away the ear studs from 
His 
ears.

[I actually wanted to post from 7- 13 pAsurams after few days. But I 
did not 
wish to let kaNNan suffer with the pain and run away in anger for few 
days. 
Let us complete it the auspicious event today itself. Hence the nest 
post is 
posted immediately following this. Please read part 2 of this post 
which 
follows now]
